I've always been told that my father's half of the family is Polish. Actually, my grandfather's dad immigrated from Poland so it's not like this is ancient history. The odd thing, though, is that my surname is evidently Czech. The name "kmiotek" doesn't mean anything in any language, but if you flip the M upside down, the word "kwiotek" evidently means "little flower" in some form of Czech dialect. It is not all that difficult to confuse the letters M and W when you've fresh off the boat and trying to fill out forms in English. Or so the theory goes.
