June Fifth: an epilogue OR: I made it through the rain

Jun 06, 2008 07:11

It wasn't an easy day, but it wasn't as bad as I thought.

I got paid (or, rather, "paid" - I'm starting to worry about finances after mid-August), and I had to wait for the check to be printed and signed, so I hung out with The Twins for a bit. Kate took my purse and was ready to go "bye-bye" with me to get some "candy" to "eat, eat". Giggle.

Then I went to Mom's, and it was evident that the date was The Elephant in the Room. That was okay, though, we had plenty else to talk about. Apparently one of my uncles on my dad's side was in town this week, went to visit Dad for 5-10 minutes (so says the nurses on duty), but never swung by to say hey to Mom. (She would've taken them out for dinner, seeing as she didn't really have supplies for a home-cooked meal, but she is quite hospitable when it comes to her in-laws.) Kinda rude, no? Damn shame - he used to be a favorite uncle of mine, but after Dad got sick, he became a real wet blanket and suggested several times that Dad would've wanted to die rather than be in this condition. Thing is, not a lot of 'heroic measures' were used to save Dad. The nurses at the nursing home agree by all intents and purposes he shouldn't have lived through what he did. He's just not ready to go yet. Mom and I figure he's either too stubborn or too mean (this is a man who got a license plate that said "Grumpy Old Fart" for Father's Day and drove around with it on his truck. With Pride.) God and Dad apparently have other plans. Who are we to not do our best to make him as comfortable as possible? And strive for him to maybe rehabilitate?

So we talked about work, called Mickie (she's having a good time), and just hung out until the storm threatened to really hit. I got home just as it started to pour. Lost electricity for a second at a time about three times. Decided to go to bed early.

So yeah, not as bad as I'd feared. No breakdowns. Plenty of beer.

I think all the teachers will be at work today (barring any catastrophes), so I'll hopefully be home after eight hours. Wouldn't cringe at going home earlier. Especially since I pulled a ten-hour day on Wednesday. I have surplus hours.

In other news, it's finally Friday. Has this week been excruciatingly long for anybody else?
