I'm reading "Twilight," and I'm scared. It's brilliant, of course. I adore it. And, at first, I was just scared that I wasn't going to be able to hold out until "New Moon" gets to paperback. (I'm not, for the record). Then, I was afraid that they will ruin it, when they make it into a movie. (If they don't get me in on the project, they will, for the record). But what I'm really scared about is that the series will be ruined by more than four books. (And it may well be, for the record).
See, writers do this a lot: they write a wonderful first novel. It's great, it's loved, and it sells well. And so they write a sequal. And another. And another. And another. Few series are good. That's just a fact. Quality deteriorates. It's the same with movies. PotC: CotBP is astounding. PotC: DMC? Good. Could be better. PotC: AWE? I'm scared for it. It could be aweful.
It could be good.
It won't be great.
But it won't be as good as the first one.
Sometimes, I just ignore the sequals. I love "The Mummy," but I haven't seen the sequal, the complanion, or the other sequal (which is still being filmed, without the origional lead actress). But I don't know if I should do that, with these books. I want to read the next one. But I don't want to be dissapointed. I don't want one crappy book, halfway through a series, to ruin all of the rest. I'm scared.
What this basically comes down to is whether or not I am able to block out a bad book, and let it not taint a good book that it might be a sequal to. I don't know if I can do it.
The good news is, Stephanie Meyer may be the sort of author who can give out consistantly good literature. Or, she might not even be able to end "Twilight" well. After all, I'm only half-way through it. I hope for the former and I seriously doubt the latter.
