What remains of the day

Okay, kids, here's the dough. I'm trying to figure out how much it would cost for me to go to Oxford, for an undergraduate degree. My father will pay for me to go to an in-state uni, which would be great, except that I'm not even planning to stay in the country. At UW Seattle, I would have a $5,985 tuition, $945 for books, and $2,265 for personal expenses. I'm not really sure what those are, but I'm counting them, as they are in addition to the boarding costs, and I'm discluding those. Total expenses are set at $17,592. Still, we'll say that he can pay $9,195 per year. (This is how much a year at UW would be-- I'm not doing living expenses, as I could then live with my parents; room and board would be $8,001).

One year's fee for overseas student: approx. £5,700 (varies between colleges)

One year's living expenses (overseas student): approx. £4,370 (term) or approx. £9,250 (if staying on at break)

One year's tuition: £3,000*

Total for one year: £13,070 ($25,653). For three years, it's £39,210 ($76,951).

Now, we must take into account the fact that you can get a BA, in the UK, in three years. If I went to an American college, it would take four. We can thus assume that my father can supply an extra year's worth of in-state fees. These four American years would be $36,780.

*Does not need to be paid until after graduation, when earning £15,000+ per annum.

Conclusion: Screwed. Must publish novel, like, now. And out-sell next Harry Potter book.

Or, I could get a scholarship, but none of them are very good for me. There is Rhodes, but I know little of it. I must do more research.

In other news, my mother is wondering if she has a wheat intolerence. It's a pity that she's divorcing my dad, because his brother Elliot's wife, my Aunt Laura, doesn't do wheat. She has a lot of wonky dietary choices. And I'm fine with that, really, if it's just her and Uncle Elliot-- I love them both, but they're only in their 50's (60's?), so they can withstand this better than my grandmother, who lives with them (or, technically, they live with her). The way I see it, a woman who was born before the Great War began should be eating as balanced a diet as she can. Grandma is frail enough as she is, thank you very much.

College recap: To get my undergrad BA, at Oxford, I would need $76,951. My father can supply $36,780. I must russle up $40,171, my self. And that's assuming that I would never have to repeat a year (not to self: remember to study for college finals). However, my book fees would be low, as Oxford has such great libraries, and the school can cover £50 (about $98) for books. I'll take $300 off of my total (books for three years-- plus, um, confectionary finances-- ie, candy money).

I must pay, in all $39,871, to go to Oxford. Not all must be paid, until I am making sufficent funds (and I can delay this, if I keep going to Oxford for my graduate degree-- though that adds more to the costs, of course).
