log Entry 1078 "armed"

Just finished up playing Mass effect (PC). Fun game. Personally I enjoyed the combat system. Run N' Gun doesn't always work in the game, and most of the times you end up dying. So the game rewards you for using your squad, and using hit and run tactics. It's a nice touch.

Story - evil aliens out to destroy the galaxy. Yeah yeah, we've heard and seen this one before. And once again it's up to the combined efforts of all the space going species to stop them.

What I did find nice was the ability to dig deep into the society, culture, and history of the major species. You get to know them a bit. In that respect it was like a season of Star Trek. Well, to put it more clearly, Babylon 5 (does anyone remember B5...I do, taped every episodes...on VHS!) Make a few twists to the story, add in some romance, and you got yourself a blockbuster game (with room for the sequel!)

Yeah, that's another part I enjoyed about it, they left it open "we've got more work to do". I really satisfied that this game didn't turn into another Elder Scroll game (level up ur character going on a bazillion side quests), or another Half Life (kill zombies...reload....kill zombies). In fact, you NEVER have to reload your weapons. That's pretty fucking sweet.

The next point is the design and feel of the humans. In most sci fi, humanity in the future loves to embrace sqaure objects. You see a ship built by humans, you can instantly tell "yeah...built on Earth. It's sqaurish". But in this game, the ships are sleeker looking. But humanity has to keep up the "speak softly and carry a big stick" policy. And lets not forget the "the fuck with aliens" groups (Terra Firma...etc).

While I was playing it, I came to realize that there's a few aspect of "Blade Runner" in the game. The game has a lot of structure around Natural Vs. synthetic life. The scenery of the main port in the game (The Citadel) reminded me of the bold camera work used to illustrate the world of Blade Runner. Also, Blade Runner embodied the blending of cultures into a single form. It's nice to be reminded of such things.

And finally, the tank was hardcore. You get to smash bugs with it.
