(Snapshots verse, possibly even canon):
Nunnally had her own friends, of course, but since her mother had died, they seemed vapid and shallow and pointless.
Although Nunnally didn't think about it in those terms. She just found it tiring to be with them, to be with almost anyone other than Lelouch (and sometimes Euphemia) actually.
So when Lelouch brought home friends (new friends, like Kallen) Nunnally always had conflicting emotions - afraid that they would take away her brother's attention, impressed that Lelouch had the energy to make new friends, and a strong desire to be included in whatever they were doing.
Which was silly. Nunnally knew full well that no fourteen-year-old wanted an eight-year-old girl to join in with them.
But Rolo was different. He was younger than Lelouch, twelve or thirteen, and flinched away from all of Lelouch's older siblings. He wasn't as obviously intimidated by Euphemia, but her bright friendliness didn't seem to touch him. When Lelouch had to leave to answer a phone call from their father, Nunnally took her chance.
“D’you play chess?”
Rolo seemed startled by the sudden question, as if he hadn’t even noticed her in the room. He was a jumpy boy. It was kind of cute. “I… er… not really. Who are you?”
“Nunnally.” Nunnally went to the games cupboard, looking through it. “How about checkers?”
“I know that game.” Rolo walked over and stood behind her, just a little taller than she was. Nunnally liked that he was around her size. It made him more approachable. “But I like Snakes’n’Ladders better. You’re not playing against anyone that way.”
“Okay.” Nunnally took out the game and set it up. “What colour do you want to be?”
“Green.” Rolo’s hand was over the piece before he hesitated. “Unless you want to…”
Nunnally picked the red piece. “I like red.”
“Oh.”
It was hardly a deep and abiding friendship, but they were surprisingly comfortable with each other, surprisingly quickly. For Nunnally it was mostly that Rolo seemed awkward and out of place enough to make their age differences less important. For Rolo, it seemed to be that Nunnally was non-threatening enough to make him relax around her. Within five minutes, they were smiling as they played, groaning every time one of them landed on a snake’s head and clapping when they landed at the bottom of a ladder. Rolo even laughed a couple of times, although Nunnally still couldn’t quite manage that.

Lelouch’s expression immediately smoothed over and he walked around the table to sit behind Nunnally, stroking her hair and planting a kiss on the top of her head. “No, you two are in the middle of a game. It wouldn’t be fair.” He nestled against Nunnally’s back, a warm and reassuring presence. “Continue.”
Rolo picked up the die and rolled, moving his token the required four spaces, but he seemed more withdrawn with Lelouch present. Nunnally thought about it and figured that that was something that made Rolo nicer to be with - he might not have lost his mother just over a year ago, but there was something about him that seemed damaged, just like she and Lelouch had been damaged. Maybe that was why Lelouch had befriended him, despite the age difference.
For the first time in her life, Nunnally felt like taking care of someone. She’d always been the one others had taken care of, and that was nice and comforting and safe, but now she wanted to take care of someone else. And that was empowering and a little scary and made her sit straighter.
When it was her turn to move, she landed on a snake’s head. “You set up the dice to do that, didn’t you Rolo?”
“What? No, I…” Rolo’s eyes were wide and sincere as he looked pleadingly at Nunnally and Lelouch. Lelouch snorted into Nunnally’s hair and Nunnally, finally, managed a laugh.
“I’m teasing you.”
Nunnally could feel Lelouch’s warm smile against her head. Rolo looked between the siblings before trying a tentative smile himself. “Oh, I…” He flushed a little. “I guess this is just fair play after you got that huge ladder.”
Nunnally pouted as big and exaggeratedly as she could. Lelouch patted her head. “There, there, baby sister.” He shifted and Nunnally turned to him just in time to see him mouth ‘Thank you' to Rolo.
Rolo’s flush deepened, and he fumbled at the die as he continued the game. Lelouch’s arms tightened around Nunnally and, for the first time in a long time, she felt simple contentment.

Nunnally's not crippled or blind in Snapshots-verse. I couldn't imagine a Lelouch who'd leave her if she was.
I totally understand the thing you have with Kallen (and share it, to an extent) but I like the thought of her and other female characters having a relationship with (and even romantic feelings for) Lelouch without it becoming all about him. The main issue I had with R2 Kallen isn't that she fell in love with Lelouch, but rather that she fell in love with him and that was suddenly the most important thing in the world, OMG. Even after he's dead and the world is moving on, she still sees things Lelouch-centered. But other people love that degree of loyalty, and I can see that too.
As for writing kids, I have a bit of a leg up since I see a lot of them (mostly infants and five-year-olds, granted) in my line of work. Suzaku's voice in Snapshots has reasonably corresponded with his age until recently when he's been a lot more selfless and mature than he really should be (but needs to be for purposes of plot). I figure not many people would complain about the differences between a fourteen-year-old's character reflecting a sixteen-year-old's more typical development. Also, I'm lazy.
I thought you did a good job with the kids in Singles, including having Nunnally slightly more mature than Rolo (which is normal, since she's a girl). Besides, the focus is definitely more on Lelouch and Suzaku, so they're good background characters.
If you still want me to write Singles-verse, what would you like me to cross it with? Snapshots?
