I HAVE TO SAY that I have already made some really great how-did-I-miss-this discoveries from this post?? Like specifically the Younha song that you picked and Lim Kim's Goodbye 20, (which I should have listened to bc I liked All Right a lot!) are SO GOOD. AOA has had a p decent run of singles (I feel like that sentence makes them sound better than they are tho? Like, they always release songs that make me go "this is good!" but never anything that I'm super into) but they are such a terrible band. Not like, the girls themselves, but just conceptually/organizationally a mess. I don't know why I liked that History song? But I did.

OMG I WAS SO INTO IT. Like. I think it was a good song but I also think I was disproportionately into it and I still don't. Totally get why? I seriously don't think I listened to anything else in May, but I didn't have a whole lot of music-listening time in May in the first place.

OK I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WITH ME AND WILD, bc after the teaser I was like "I'M SO EXCITED THIS SOUNDS MAGNIFICENT/LIKE A SWEETTUNE DREAM!!!!" and then when the song came out I was like "nah". Which doesn't make sense because the teaser is the song and the song is the teaser, it's not like it was... misleading. And also it's totally a sweettune dream? I came back and liked it better a couple of weeks later, but by that time Catherine was super into it, and sometimes I feel like if we don't both like stuff right away it gets divided into the imaginary "Catherine's" column. (It's an imaginary column in this specific case but sometimes we get serious about whose responsibility it is to love things.) ANYWAY. I like horns a lot, so I liked Gun better. But it's kind of like what you were saying for me -- I liked what 9M did this year a lot, but I liked what they did last year so much better, sooooooo it's hard not to be a little disappointed even though comparing stuff to Ticket/News is (for me) kind of an unfair standard??

I haven't listened to the new younha but she's my forevet girl so I'm not surprised. all I know about aoa is that choa is cute and one of them was in a drama I watched with my parents. I love that all the comments under hanibbun/adtoy (right?) are like this song is so good <3333 and then the comments under the I norae hear this song and come back are like WHY DOES THE CHOREO SUCK. I like the falsetto in adtoy! I'm surprised I didn't notice how hard it is to sing during the perfs. but then again, they know what they're doing. I'm sure after taecyeon they'll start splitting off for the army so it's nice they had gr8 singles this year.

I get that way too with sweetune??? like I never get tired of shinsadong tiger like EVER, but I didn't like number 9 as much as I thought I would. the backtrack on wild KILLS. one of the few instrumentals I'll listen to as a song by itself. I really love the mv too! like everything I wanted out of a 9m mv. I thought I was going to like gun better too? it has such a great feel and the styling was a bit tacky and just great. my lists are predictable bc I like s

Choa is so cute! I didn't know one of them was in a drama. ALSO LOL I THINK THE CHOREO FOR BOTH OF THOSE 2PM SONGS WAS AWFUL. Literally laughable. I got the giggles over both of them. But yeah the falsetto was amazing (who knew Nichkhun had that in him?). It is nice, though. I guess that'll be soon?

I think I'm pm the same with Shinsadong and Sweettune... both are about 75% hit and 25% miss with me I think?? They've both done some of my all-time favorites and also some I didn't care about. Number 9 was a hit with me though.

Yeah Hyejung was in Chungdamdong Alice as Moon Geunyoung's younger sister, and Seolhyun was in smth too. but really idk AOA. 2pm choreo is now just sleeveless shirts and muscles?? But it was better than the wreck that was the shuffle step Terminator promo. Nichkhun does Nothing Better imo? and his self-composed song was really great, esp after his controversy.

I really disliked the Sweettune song he did for the end of the year stages last year. Yeah, I don't think there are any composers I like at least all their songs from. Like I'd like E-Tribe but I don't like some of his Dal Shabet stuff.

Gooooooood AOA has so many members, I think Seolhyun is one of the young-looking pretty ones I would prob have cut if I were in charge of that band. But lmao SO TRUE about 2pm. I like that Nichkhun thing too!

I totally forget what that sounded like but I was disappointed too. I was expecting to like that one ~the most~ and I didn't like it at all. I mean... I guess no one's going to waste their best songs on a one-off Gayo Daejun perf, but STILL, man. Some of those were good!

idk them at all, they are a faceless entity to me. How are their band performances? I thought it was about time girlband got on the scene then completely neglected to get into them at all.

Yeah you think, 'ah, at least Sweetune production won't let me down' and then the should-be-recycled-awfulness Shinsadong Tiger track. I generally liked all of them, except I'm so offended a bunch of great vocals sang THAT.

I mean their band performances... are not band performances. Their songs -- even Moya, which was written to be performed by the band are all backtracked/obviously not actually being performed by a band. CNBlue totally used to fake it on music shows, but at least they were allowed to really pretend, yk? That's really my problem with AOA -- the whole concept. I like a couple of the girls and their songs are good, but it irritates me that FNC couldn't commit to a straight-up girl band... that they had to go with this stupid mixed band/dance concept. They do sound good on the v rare occasion that they get to use their instruments as more than props.

Yeah, but FT Island/CN Blue/all bands aren't allowed to perform on shows? The way the sound system works, they can't play completely live. Do they do something different from CN Blue? It definitely speaks to the industry that they have two dude bands and the girl band has to be able to mostly dance as well (and look sexy/synchronised as I've seen from some stuff they've done - ofc most girl groups are like this, but there are some that aren't). They sound good! The girl who plays piano has a really pretty voice.

I know they weren't allowed to a couple of years ago and I assume they still don't?? Not sure though. But it's like, even though CNBlue and FTI are "false" rock bands too -- just as idol-constructed, just in a different format -- the company presents them as a band in a way they don't with AOA. Like what I find ridiculous about the not-playing AOA performances is not that they're fake-playing instruments, but that there's no way the instruments they're fake-playing could be making the song that they're playing. Does that make sense at all? I know CNBlue didn't write "I'm A Loner" and I know they didn't play their instruments in most of the performances of it -- but at least when FNC ent gave that to them they gave them something that was played with guitars and drums. A lot more attention is paid to the illusion of the band. I still don't know wtf they're going for with AOA.

Ahh, okay - I was confused bc I didn't think there was a way you didn't know about the sound systems, and I haven't seen more than a handful of band AOA stages so idrk what happens. Like that every girl has an instrument so she plays hers when they have stages? That makes sense. I guess if I think about it this way - if AOA was on the year-end shows, they'd dance first and play second, and if they had a concert it wouldn't primarily be the band. Whereas I've listened to entire CN Blue concerts and they're fairly laid back and just about being a band, however produced. It's just too interesting that this is what happens with the girlband.
