I did, at all of your heeding, go see the Star Trek movie last night.
Verdict: AWESOME.
tinhooves said, "MAYBE PART OF THE REASON THE MOVIE WAS SO GREAT WAS BECAUSE NONE OF THE CHARACTERS ARE INSTANTLY REPULSIVE AND MOSTLY LOLDORABLE?" AND UH, I KIND OF AGREE. Suluuuuuuuuu! And his space sword! And the way he kinda saves the day with it after Kirk's "ooooookay fencing! HOW WEIRD IS THAT DUDE" face. AND MCCOY AND... EVERYTHING. AND UHURA AND HER PRETTY SWISHY PONYTAIL (that will hopefully be doing more than making out with Spock in the next... presumable movie? WHAT A BORING SHIP*). And Chekov and his babyface (it took almost as long for me to realize he was the dude from Charlie Bartlett as it took me to realize Kirk's mom was Cameron from House)!! And. yeah. They were maybe my favorites. But jesus, ALL OF THEM WERE SUPER WELL CAST. WTF WINONA RYDER THOUGH, loooool.
It took me like thirty minutes to realize the baddies were Romulans. I guess they... like tattoos. Or facepaint. (I was seriously in some kind of weird trekkie mode for the first 15ish minutes though-- partially because I thought it was SO LAME that they had to create NEW ALIENS--
UMMMMMMMMMM, the callbacks were really cute. I probably missed a zillion because basically everything I know about TOS comes from parody songs,
Ultimate Trek, and the Trouble With Tribbles. BUT THE REDSHIRT!!! "You're out of your Vulcan mind!" aaaaaand Spock telling Kirk the exact probability that they were going to die. AWWWWWWW.
Also I HAVE READ SO MANY REACTION POSTS, and I have to say: OH MY GOD INTERNET, they were not going to a) create new female characters to even out the ratio (AS MUCH AS I WOULD LOVE THAT) or b) hire anyone white to play any of the various colored characters. I do not understand how any of this is even a discussion topic. THE GENDER + ETHNICITY + NAMES + OCCUPATIONS + BASICALLY EVERYTHING OF THE CAST WERE SET. J.J. Abrams isn't dumb enough to mess with that on his first go.
IN CONCLUSION, I can't decide if I think the AU thing is AWESOME/CLEVER or not. Dilemma.
*did you guys know the show was actually Kirk/Uhura? You... probably did. When I was twelve I saw Nichelle Nichols speak at a Trekkie convention and she was talking about how when they were going to do the big
interracial kiss scene Spock/Uhura style, when William Shatner stepped in and said (as she told it) "I think I've anyone's going to kiss Nichelle--er, Uhura, it should be me--er, Kirk that kisses Nichelle--er, Uhura and not Leonard--er, Spock." AND THEY CHANGED IT. I remember thinking it was really weird that they could just... change that. Because you'd think that kind of thing would get set up. But I guess not in the 60s and not on Star Trek, AND THAT'S WHY THE MOVIE IS ALLOWED TO BE SPOCK/UHURA. Even though it is boring.
...not that Kirk/Uhura would have been better, because it would not have.
