YES WE CAN

This one is the one that made me believe it was possible.

I took my mom in her wheelchair to vote this morning. There were hardly any lines at all. Only one person in front of me and two in front of her, although the poll workers were NOT helpful in getting mom up to her spot in line, since I had to stand in a different line. I kept running over to push her up, then running back.

We had only one glitch. The booth set up for the handicapped was not set up to handle wheelchair height. BZUH??? So mom had to fill out her ballot on the table with the donuts for the poll workers. Luckily we got rid of the stupid touch screen machines and went back to paper ballots a while back. Makes you feel more secure, stuffing that big old ballot in the box.

And here, in this reddest of red states, where we live just across town from Dubya's future castlehome, there were three people out front working the Distance Marker line (the line limiting electioneering to a certain distance from the polls). They were handing out literature and answering questions -- camped out with their cooler and lunch and chairs, helping voters who had come to the wrong precinct, directing folks who just wanted a parking place -- three older ladies, likely of my mom's generation, or of mine. They were the only ones supporting a candidate out in front of our polling place, three older women in the heart of Republican country, the belt buckle of the Bible belt, with their big bright OBAMA sign. They were as thrilled with my bumper stickers as I was to see them there, fighting the good fight.

Then me and mom headed to Starbucks and got our FREE Eggnog Lattes. I told the barista I thought it was supposed to be a free regular coffee, but she said no, their instructions were "any free Tall beverage". WOOT I say!!!

*settles in to wait for the results*
