For any of you who have not heard of it, Yuletide is an obscure fandom Christmas fic exchange. These fandoms can be books, comics, tv, movies, mythology, historical, you name it. They can be older fandoms that have faded into obscurity, modern fandoms that have yet to produce notable amounts of fic, books that have never produced fandoms, etc. etc. Really, this can be anything:Anne of Green Gables or The Great Gatsby or Chariots of Fire or... you know, anything. A master list of all fandoms that have ever participated can be found here.
I'm posting now because nominations have just opened up. If you have any interest in participating, you should go check out the website, or yuletide/yuletide_admin. And then go over and nominate six fandoms you might like to request. Because Yuletide is your chance of requesting fic for that random fandom that for some reason no one writes in but you can't get out of your head. (Those of you who have mentioned wanting Thief fic, here's your chance!)
Personally, I'm heading to Yuletide for two reasons:
a) I tend to discover fandoms five to ten years too late, after all the buzz has died down and half of the interesting-looking story links are dead. So, the resurrection of dead fandoms!
b) I have an unexplained longing to see fic for my favorite childhood stories. Anne, Ratty and Toady, Mary Colin and Dickon (OT3 of OT3s), etc. I think it comes from the fact that I spent hours every night composing massive stories for them in my head, and I love seeing them from a grown-up perspective. What happens to them next? What levels of the story were ignored to make it a children's story? What kind of adults do these children make? And (especially for the older stories) how do they react to the historical events that would occur in their timeline? Perhaps I'm suffering from the inability to let go, but I love these stories!
Now I'm trying to decide what to nominate. And you know what I really want? Five Little Peppers fic. I want it SO BADLY. This was possibly my First Ever Fandom, even before Narnia - I composed epic stories (future fic, adventures, AUs) in my head for years. Polly/Jasper! And Joel! And Ben! And Pickering (whom I loved for the sake of his unrequited Polly-love)! Only I do not think that this is a story I will find even through Yuletide, because I have never met anyone in my entire life who has read The Five Little Peppers, a series of children's books written between 1878 and 1916, chronicling the adventures of the five children of the Pepper family. I do not know what brought my mother to read these to me as a child, but I grew up on them. If I ever find so much as a Five Little Peppers drabble, I will be Deliriously Happy.
Oh, you know what else I was ridiculously fannish about as a child? Eight Cousins. I wanted to be Rose. Archie was always my favorite cousin, and I was rather OTF about Archie and Charlie, I think. (*sniff*)
I could go on like this for a long time. I will stop now before this turns into a huge post on fannishness in children's literature. Though perhaps that will come along eventually.
