so, um, I got this 14 day trial to urge's unlimited downloading deal; and they have basically everything. So I guess now would be the best time out of ever to ask -
OMG OMG OMG. Ok. Where to begin? WHERE TO BEGIN? I'll sift through iTunes and pull some names out? Yeah, I'll start with A. Or B. Or something...
Bat for Lashes - Fur and Gold I bought this (or uh, downloaded it?) because one of the songs was on Thom Yorke's iTunes playlist. It kind of has the same feel as some of Björk's stuff. Not really, but kind of? Or maybe Emiliana Torrini's Love in the Time of Science (which I also recommend over 'Fisherman's Woman' which is pretty boring.) Anyways, I'd say get the whole thing, but 'Horse & I' or 'Trophy' would be nice previews.
Beriut - Gulag Orkestar Liz ONCE AGAIN got me all crazy about somebody (First it was Sondre!). It's gypsy folky briliance, really. And I think they're out of Arizona or something? Definitely get the title track. Actually, try to find 'Elephant Gun' off of Lon Gisland (I think it's an EP?). It's absolutely gorgeous. I'll upload it if you can't find it.
Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets I finally got this after having listened to 'Needle in the Camel's Eye' and 'Baby's On Fire' off the Velvet Goldmine sountrack a million times. It's kind of perfect?
The Clash - London Calling I used to think this album was extremely overrated. I've always liked 'Spanish Bombs' but I never got into the rest for some unexplainable reason. And now, even though I've only listened to it properly for about six months, I feel like I've always loved it. I can't really give you highlights to download because the whole thing is fucking brilliant. Seriously. It's the best thing ever.
Elvis Costello - ANYTHING? Allie's on a massive Elvis kick. Oh my God, more than just a kick really. He moved into my top five and I'm pretty sure he's never going to leave. I just uploaded five of my favorite albums for somebody else and I'm totally willing to send you the links... if you want them. Or just one. Or something. You definitely need at least 'My Aim is True'. Or, 'Armed Forces' OR 'This Year's Model' . They're all equally brilliant. I really wish I would've loved him this much when I saw him a few years ago. Oh well.
Emiliana Torrini - Love in the Time of Science I already mentioned this, but I'll do it again. I bought this album after TTT came out because of 'Gollum's Song'. I fell in love with it and then waited patiently for her to release another album, unfortunately it isn't anything like this one. But we don't need to get into that. Love in the Time of Science is trip-hoppy electronic-y icelandic bliss.
Kate Bush I can't remember if I already recommended her to you? You like Tori and Björk so if you haven't already, you must add Kate to make it the holiest of trios. Go four 'Hounds of Love', 'The Dreaming', or 'The Kick Inside'. She's so lovely.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Funny story to go with this one (Not so much funny... more the fact that I'm stupid). I thought for the LONGEST time that My Bloody Valentine was some current emo band. The name got me all confused. I then found out it was all early 90s shoegaze. HAH! How stupid was I? And I called myself a music fan? I swear... Anyways, it's definitely the best album to get you into shoegaze's dreamy goodness.
