New JORB!!!

So I've gotten a new job... after 4 months cooking breakfast at 5am, or earlier, and giving up my weekends...I've finally found something better.

I work for the university again, this time as a Math and History tutor in a program for Mid and High School students. On Fridays I work in a classroom all day in ASD and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I pickup students at their school and bring them to the Cuddy center for tutoring. I really enjoy this job.

I had my first day yesterday and I helped this one student with math... intermediate algebra... all I heard from this student was "I can't" and "I don't know." So I had a great time telling her that 'can't' doesn't exist, and neither does the word 'no.' A little combination of teasing, encouragement, and positive reinforcement/negative reinforcement and she was whizzing through the material. Haha, I had fun treating her like a little sister...

I have to say that I find it sad that her math teacher had written in some of the answers for her...and they were completely wrong. I mean seriously stupidly wrong. I also found it disconcerting that this 10th grader did not have her times tables memorized...didn't know 3x6 or 8x7... I mean, hello? I really think that if you don't get the times tables down, that you shouldn't pass your grade. Times tables are really something that you use for the rest of your life, whether you work at the freaking grocery store, burger king, or at a corporate job. There's something out there that allows this kind of crap to happen, but I'm not sure what it is yet. Poor parents, permissive system, something....

Anyhow, I gotta run. I'm gonna try and get a ride-along set up with UPD. See all the MCA's, and such. Gotta go. Peace - Eric
