As I said earlier, I’m working with a children’s theatre company where I get paid 60 bucks a show to do a kitschy version of Cinderella. This is the same company that I’ve auditioned for for about two or three years ( look back in my journal and I think you’ll read about it). Every time I auditioned, they told me they loved me but never gave me any work. Guess they didn’t love me THAT much. Anyways, this past April I finally got them to work with me when the girl they originally wanted to play Cinderella broke her arm. I was wary in taking the part as I had already felt sort of icky about them. I mean, I auditioned for them 3 times! They said they wanted to work with me, but it sure didn’t seem like it. They put me on their “on-call” list, and when they did call me ( once a year) to do what they call “walk about” gigs ( as in I get paid to wear some sort of clowning costume for events…not really theater work, but a job) they gave me little to no short notice about the gig, so I couldn’t jive with the schedule. The never wanted me for their legit heater shows. Because they were obligated to rehire the actors they were already working with…But then why did they hold auditions if they weren’t looking for new people? It wasn’t as if they HAD to hold auditions. They’re not union.
But they got in a scrape, exhausted their resources, and I got a phone call. I took it because the last show I did (not counting mom’s medicine show) left me wanting to quite theatre all together. Maybe it would be good to work a little. So I took it.
Well, I’ve only been working with the company about 3 months and I’m already burned out. See, it all started a little while back when they told me they wanted to cast me in another one of their shows called Fantasy Stew. They said it was a smaller show, and would require less rehearsal. I said yes. But little did I know what I was getting into.
