For a tiny picture like that, I'd go with the one with eye contact.

Any suggestions? It had to be landscape, and not too close up because I don't want to cover the face, but not too far out too so that the features and expressions could be seen.

I like the one on the far right. I like the off-center composition more.

This will be no help at all. I like the picture on the right better, and it attracts me as the mom of an older baby, but the contrast on the one on the left makes it more eye-catching.

No, I actually thought of that. Finding a picture that fit exactly what I needed to do to it, though, was a bit of a pain.

I don't know. I think the left one reaches out more to you (maybe the eye contact or something), but I think the right image implies more action going on in the context of the picture. The child on the right looks like he's outside playing and having fun, which seems to fit more with the target page than the left child who's more posed and looking at you.
