In the aftermath of the death of Andrew Lance Luna, I have come to appreciate life again. I never really knew Lance outside of band, but his presence, like everyone at such a small school, was a natural part of the GAA environment. Things wouldn't have been the same without him, without any of us.
Death is tricky. Sometimes you can escape it. And if there's one thing I ever learned from my life in the Seventh-Day Adventist church, God always has a plan for everything.
On Friday, March 3, 2006, Lance was driving in the left lane on the freeway, crashed into the center divider, and was hit by a semi truck. I am not sure about other particulars, but his body was identified yesterday.
So I got lucky. I was lucky in April 2005 when my Corolla crashed into the center divider that Tuesday night. I was lucky my car was totalled immediately on the side of the freeway. I was lucky I got whiplash and a minor seatbelt burn.
I was lucky that it was 10:00 pm on the 2 and the freeway was empty. I was lucky no one was around me on the freeway, that I didn't crash into another car. I was lucky that the car stopped on the side of the road instead of the middle, putting myself out of the danger of oncoming traffic. I was lucky that I was alone, that I was a young 17-year old and able to recover without major consequences. I was lucky I was able to walk away from the scene.
For whatever reason, there is something I have left to do here on earth. No matter how much I stray from the SDA church, I still believe that God has a calling, a purpose, for each of us. We're lucky to be alive, however short or long that time may last. Don't waste it.
