"These damn fractions!" Sam chucked the pencil onto the table, causing it to bounce, tip first, and then land in Spencer's latest creation.
"Hey! Watch what you're doing!"
Sam sighed and pushed herself up from the table. "Sorry, Spence." Picking her pencil off the floor, she examined his sculpture. "What is it?"
He grinned, ecstatic to have someone to explain his brainchild to. "You see, it's an elephant. Balancing on its trunk. With a monkey sitting on its head. And a bird doing backflips on his spine. Cool, right?"
"Uh...sure." Slowly, she stepped away with her eyes wide. He was insane. Then, her eyes got wider as she inspected the elephant--or what was supposed to be an elephant, anyway--more closely. "Is that it's--? Is it anatomically correct?!"
"Uh..." He blushed, took a look. He knew, of course, very well what was there. "Yeah. Yeah, it is."
"Oh. Well that's...that's great."
Spencer stood back, his arms crossed, admiring his work. "Yeah, it is, isn't it?"
"Riiight." She retreated to the table. "Spence?"
"Yeah?" he asked, this time from underneath the sculpture. His voice was slightly muffled.
"I don't suppose you know anything about fractions?"
"Uh...I don't know. What's the question?"
"'Divide two-thirds by seven-fifths. Simplify if possible."
"Oh." He got up, brushed his hands on his pants, and joined her at the round table. Laying his hands on either side of her, he inspected the problem in the text book. She had already rewritten the problem in her math notebook--though it was difficult to read a lot of it, because the other side of the paper had been assaulted with doodles from a permanent marker.
"That's easy." Spencer pointed to the problem and began explaining. "Flip the second fraction, multiply it by the first. That's your answer."
"That's it?"
"Yeah."
"But why multiply it when I'm dividing?"
"That's just the way it is. I don't know the...mechanics of it."
"Oh." Sam did the problem with Spencer watching. "You know, I always had a thing for Freddie?" She waited, letting it sink it. "I think it was the smart thing he had going for him. Kind of like you."
Again, she was quiet. Then, she started packing up. "Well, looks like Carly won't be back for awhile, so...I'm going to go. Thanks for the help."
Spencer's mouth didn't close for several minutes after she shut the door.
