I would go with the new wheels. If you can afford it, the peace of mind is totally worth it. Plus, it is much less likely that something bad will happen on a cross-country drive.
I never missed having a car in Chicago. I wouldn't even be considering buying a car if I didn't think it necessary for both practical and quality of life reasons - after 9 months of dealing with what passes for public transit in Santa Cruz I'm thoroughly over it.
