Chapter 4
Time passed, as time is wont to do. Nothing of great importance occurred. Hagrid continued to tend to me, but Dumbledore did not stop by again - something I have to admit was a minor disappointment.
One warm day was spent trying to discourage a bird of some sort from making its home within my branches. For a short while I thought I had been successful. As it turned out, I was wrong, as the determined creature returned time and time again with materials to build a nest. Eventually I gave up the fight and conceded to the small winged animal, besides, the company may turn out to be quite nice.
The sun set on another day and all was quiet. Or at least that is what I thought. Darkness had fallen quickly and suddenly I began to pick up on some strange noises. Ones that seemed almost misplaced amongst the quiet to which I was accustomed. Noises that became louder. Happy voices, laughter and various other sounds that could only mean one thing - the children had arrived. Oh joyous moment! Children, young adults I corrected myself. Oh how my days would now be full of their energy and mischief, their joys and their woes. Finally they had arrived!
From my position I could see them pile out of the carriages in their masses and disappear into the castle. Oh I'm sure my imagination could never match the wonders that lay inside on the magical day. Movement drew my attention away from the castle as a fleet of boats appeared led by Hagrid. Now the occupants of these boats really did look like children. They must be the new first years. Their faces a mixture of innocence and nerves as they stared up at the castle in sheer awe.
I watched as they clambered out of the boats and followed Hagrid into the castle. It amused me that they had huddled together and followed in rapt silence. I knew they wouldn't stay like that for very long... well all except for two already boisterous young boys who I could tell were going to make life more than a little interesting.
The doors closed behind them but it did not stop the merry sounds from pouring forth. For this I was grateful, as the noise gave me a certain sense of comfort. These would be the first children I would get to see grow. I would come to know more than they could ever imagine and yet for them to be happy and safe would become my greatest joy.
Eventually the sound died down and the lights were dimmed. Tonight was the first night I felt truly content. I could not wait for day to break.
