Not much new happening.

Been dealing with some back issues which have subsided but have left some lingering sciatic nerve issues. At the end of the last few days, the lower part of my hamstring and upper part of my calf throb with painful delight. I've been to my chiropractor a couple times and he has helped relieve the back pain but it seems like anytime I have had issues around the sciatic, it has to work its way out down my leg. Fortunately with all the issues and surgeries Beth had with her back last year, we have a fair supply of various and sundry muscle relaxants and pain killers on hand. I am not one to rely on pills to solve my problems but when your thigh is quivering (and not in a good way mind you) a bit of relief is all you want. Tonights choice of relief was Oxycodone (generic percoset). Taken with a glass of wine (yes I know I am hardly a role model here, save the lecture) it seems to have done the trick and I should have no trouble drifting off to sleep.

Therefore, I bring you todays wine review.

Castello Banfi - 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva
Banfi is located in the Brunello region of Tuscany

80% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo Nero, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
12 months on Salvonian Oak

I am finding that I really enjoy varietals based around the Sangiovese grape. Yes, I know I should have someones liver and some Fava beans with a Chianti, but the Oxycodone complemented it just fine.

A deep plum color with garnet highlights in the light. Earthy aroma of grape skins and dusty barrels in a cellar. There's a definite woodiness to the taste but it is still somewhat reserved and adds more to the earthy flavors than coming across as an oak bite. The fruits are coming through as plum jam down the middle of my tongue and cherry along the sides. A fair amount of acid is present but seems balanced by supple leather tones, perhaps a little cola nut, pepper spice, and some Tuscan dust. It's actually quite drinkable and doesn't need any time to breathe. Not bad as solo drink but would probably do well with everything from pot roast to pasta & tomato sauce, or some dry cheeses.

I picked this up at Costco tonight for $12.99. A solid G all around and leaning into the FG category based on value. I'll probably pick up a couple more bottles next trip.
