After some deliberation, I've decided to give
NaNoWriMo a whirl this year. I've done it a couple times in the past but haven't finished. I'd been hesitant to do it this year because I didn't want to stop working on my novel-in-progress, but I haven't been doing much with it lately anyway. The truth is, I seem to be mired in a bit of writer's block, and that block looks like me feeling like a joyless hack. So I need to bring back the joy, and losing the hacky feelings tends to be a product of engaging in the writing process more frequently. Hopefully my November project* will accomplish both goals.
I have decided to take the liberty of not writing a proper novel, but instead following in the footsteps of the fantabulous
c0untmystars and ripping off her 50 Songs Project idea. This will entail setting iTunes to random, making a list of the first 50 songs that come up, and using them as prompts in the order they appear. They may lead to stories, short short stories, scenes, or even poems. I really just want to keep an open mind and get myself writing. In the event that I blow through all 50 songs and still haven't hit 50,000 words, I'll generate another list of what seems like an appropriate number at that time. (I also reserve the right to veto certain selections from the initial list: random audiobook chapters, recitativ portions of Die Zauberflote, that 15th Barenaked Ladies song, etc.)
My plan is to generate the list on Halloween night, and possibly even dig in once the clock strikes midnight. If anyone else is planning to join in the NaNo madness, let me know! We've got a rare November where the first two days of the month and the last two days fall on weekends (plus an extra hour the first weekend for daylight savings time), so what better year to take the plunge?
*No, not that
November Project, but wouldn't it be funny if one of their songs ended up on the list?
