So here's a cruelly ironic story. Last semester, Holly convinced me that we should purchase tickets to a Billy Joel / Elton John concert with some extra money that we had. She was doing a lot of work in school at the time and figured that it would act as some sort of awesome treat for her for finishing all of her term papers and whatnot. It was supposed to be in early December. Well, early December came and went and Joel-John got sick... they had to reschedule some of their dates and cancel others. Ours, luckily, got re-scheduled for late February. No big deal. Well... it wasn't a big deal, at first. Holly spent all of last semester working on a difficult paper for one of her classes and finally got finished. On a whim, she decided to enter into a sort of essay contest conference, where they pick a handful of essays on linguistic topics and invite those winners to speak at a conference. As it turns out, her hours of dedication paid off: she was selected! They want her to go to a conference in Pittsburgh to read her paper and field questions from audience members! This is a very incredible honor, especially for an at-the-time first semester grad student. Now here's the cruelty: it takes place over the same weekend as the Joel-John concert. So now Holly doesn't get to see a concert which she has been working toward all semester, we're out a good chunk of change, and she is being held from the concert because of... yes, the same paper that she had been writing all semester.

Oh, cruel irony!

But the other night, we were looking at pictures of Pittsburgh online, and it looks pretty

. Nathan talks about moving to New York a lot, and although at times it sounds like an amazing idea, it still frightens me. Pittsburgh appears to be a little city on an island in the middle of a lake - a very weird concept to me, since I have never had cause to imagine what Pittsburgh looked like before now. It's like the perfect stop between Lawrence and New York. A small city to get you used to a larger city. Perhaps one day, when we finish with school and are ready to move one more step up, we will find ourselves in Pittsburgh. 'Cause right now I've got pretty positive feelings about the place.
