Silence. Sweet, sweet silence.
It wasn’t even the tense kind of silence, like in an awkward conversation waiting for a reply. This was the truly peaceful kind. The kind that invoked relaxation, like soothing sunlight and the faint sound of birds chirping off in the distance.

The static buzz of a computer running was the only noise in the darkened surroundings. The mechanical form of that, as well as the silhouette of a ghostly figure curled up in the corner of the room was all that could be seen. Deep breaths lifted the white fabric of the man’s shirt at a rate of approximately once per eight seconds. Pale fingers lay spread across the wooden floor, knees drawn up to his chest in an almost infantile gesture. He was calm, that was for sure. His dark eyes were half-lidded and staring at the barely visible wood grain on the floorboards.

The attic was the only place he could relax, he was finding. It was good that it was empty, seeing as how additional objects would only serve as distraction. He’d put up there just that which he needed - a good laptop computer with speakers and the microphone. The computer contained all of his essentials and nothing else. The criminal records, the evidence files, and the voice-scrambling program. Keeping things as simple as possible was a way for him to keep his utmost focus.

“Ryuuzaki?” The voice abruptly came from the computer speakers. The sole occupant of the room did not seem at all startled. He rose languidly to his feet, meandered over, and crouched down in front of the glowing screen. An icon was clicked on, the program loading almost instantly.

“This is L,” the man replied. “Are we ready to begin?”

If one looked very closely at L’s pallid visage, they would be able to see the tiny smile tugging at the corner of his lips. This was sure to be interesting.
