James moves from deprecated livejournal account to PARTY MCFLY!
well, i've had a good few years with this account and i think i'd rather be known to livejournal as PARTY MCFLY from now on. actually, i've been feeling this way for a couple of years but put it off until i was completely bored of cleaning the house.
beautiful words i heard and read over the last few days, which i can remember at the moment:
elixir
fold
will
pale
porcelain
lens
wist
marmalade
and, of course, perhaps the most perfect word in all spoken and written languages:
moustache.
i had a discussion on wednesday with a classmate about beautiful words, and we adamantly agreed that a beautiful word isn't a florid word. florid words with seven syllables, exotic pronunciations, and fancy textual ligatures don't make me feel good when said, written, or read in the way that a word composed of a single syllable and a smoothly taut lip does. there is also the function and concept of the word to consider; i personally have visual and emotional associations that determine how a word's definition relate to its sound or text. i don't think this kind of thing is uncommon to most people.
the study of typography is a good exercise in concentrating ideas on beautiful words and how they are read or heard. try opening several different books at the same time to compare the forms of the letters. also, try opening your word processor window and typing out different fonts at an enormous point size to examine how impossibly minute details and metrics will affect the letter, word, sentence, and paragraph.
