I've been reading up on the Bluestockings Society this year. Another explanation given is that blue worsted stockings were routinely worn during the day, replaced by more formal black stockings in the evening. When Elizabeth Vesey told Benjamin Stillingfleet to come in his blue stockings, it may have been an indication of the informal (and socially egalitarian) nature of the salon. In any case, it's a term I fondly use myself.
