Gimli Seekrit Projekt

Sep 06, 2010 22:55

About two weeks ago I was asked to create a not-a-scroll Pelican Scroll for Gimli for Tarrach. This is waysuperextracool for several reasons, partly because Tarrach is an ubergeek and one of my heros and especially because the Pelican would complete his set of Peerages. (Yup, Knight, Laurel, Royal Peer, and now Pelican!) I wanted to make this an amazing "scroll" but only had about two weeks to pull it off... After brainstorming for a day or so, Fina and I agreed that a belt pouch or bag with Sutton Hoo inspired Pelicans embroidered on it and nifty period tools in it would fit the bill nicely. Since this was going to be for Tarrach, simple store-bought materials certainly would not do - I needed geektastic materials! Therefore, I proceeded to quickly contact all the people who I thought could be helpful in providing materials this endeavor. Greatest thanks to all of you for so generously proving materials in such a timely manner!

Our contributing artisans are:
gwyneth1362  wove the ground fabric, a gorgeous garnet wool
mightyjesse  dyed and spun the dark gold and black wool yarns
dread_ex  dyed and spun the light green and pink wool yarns
Fiona of the Harp dyed and spun the silks - she provided a selection of colors of which I used the white, yellow, blue, and orange
katrionans  wove the strap out of fine gold and black wool.

I contributed some Pennsic-dyed linen for the lining and did the embroidery. The interlining was a plain linen canvas.

Thanks to devikat  andilaifire  for assistance with the translation.

The tools inside the bag included a firestriker and steel from Asni, a special bead from Ia, a medallion from Thunderbunny, Anglo-Scandinavian "toilet implements uncertain purpose" by Svein. Sadly, many of those were collected right before the ceremony and I failed to take pictures.
