Still in Germany -- I come back to the States on Sunday. I finally saw up close some things that looked definitively "German" (well, aside from the spaetzl served at lunch --- this is the German conception of pasta). I did a short hike today with some colleagues; we went over the ridge and down into the little village sitting below the institute down in the valley. There were some ruins --- the tiny remnant of a watchtower situated on a bluff where one could survey the two little valleys that meet here. The little village is "Oberwolfach - Walke", and the watchtower was called "Walkenstein"; it dates back to 1364 at least. It was really just a rectangular (5 x 10) wall about 3 feet in height, with a pit of sorts in the middle. I did get to see arrowslits though. (Woo hoo!).
Signing off, and heading to sleep.
Guten Nacht, und auf wiedersehen!
