So I heard some very interesting gossip from one of our art supply reps today.
#1. Curry's on the south shore will be closing it's doors at the end of January. I'm thinking I might head out there to see what they might be liqudating. While Curry's was never a direct competitor of ours, he was to Omer des Serres... and Omer is our biggest competitor. With Curry's out of the picture, I hear Omer is planning on hiking alot of prices. Good for us, because we'll be underselling him by alot, instead of a little, again.
#2. Now is the time to stock up on Winsor & Newton, and Liquitex paints. The North American distributors of these brands thought it was oh so silly to have American and Canadian pricing for these products. They decided to fire the Canadian reps, ship everything to Montreal from NYC, and charge Canadian retailers based on the fluctuating American dollar plus a premium percentage. This is all going to come into effect towards the end of February/March, and this means that the tube of paint you now pay 5$ for could increase to about 8$. There is going to be such an increase that my boss is seriously considering no longer carrying Winsor & Newton products... silly, I know, I'm still working on stopping him from doing that.
