Historically

Eden's magic comes from her ancestors; they were tied to the land (Ireland) by blood. The first mention of her bloodline dates back to the Tain Bo Culainge or the Cattle-Raid of Cooley, where Queen Mebd stops her army before a prophetess, Fedelma, who says she is of the Sid; that is, she is part of the Tuatha de Danaan, or the people of the Goddess Danu, or a fae. Fedelma tells Medb that she will fail, that she beholds them bathed in red, but Mebd interprets the prophecy as that she will succeed. Since then, Eden's family is woven throughout Ireland's history; they serve the Irish royals, especially those who are also of Fae blood, because her bloodline is tied to the land. They historically live in Cruachan, because that is where Mebd lived.

The blood has thinned since that time. Once where a prophet was born once a generation, one is now born once every four or five. The sid blood is too thin to withstand a prophet, and family history dictates that when one is born, they are tied to the family forever.

Family tradition also follows that:

The firstborn is given the father's name; male or female
The firstborn is made to be the father's sacrifice
The firstborn is responsible for the passing on of the family's history

Eden was born Aohdan Mac Cionaoith - Little Fire Sprung from Flame. She is also the first person born with blood strong enough to carry a prophet, which means that she has a true name - a name that only she knows, and a name that given to anyone else, can control her. She also is bound, if a fae queen or king demands her service, to provide it, as long as no other attempts to claim it or as long as someone who knows her true name does not naysay it.

Prophecy

Eden's prophecy works in two ways:

Spill of Blood: The spill of Eden's blood can trigger a prophetic fit. Usually these fits are incoherant, and act like a seizure. She has no control over the visions she sees and many of them may overlap and conflict. She was trained by her father to write out what she sees, but this has variable effect. They leave her disoriented and often she will get sick/vomit afterwards.

Ritual/Spontaneous: A specific ritual can bring about a controlled prophecy - or it can happen spontaneously, but this is rare. A controlled prophecy is usually more coherent (but no less easy to understand) and often times Eden knows part of what will actually happen. These can include visions on her end, but she will generally not reveal their content. These also often are followed by very specific instructions for whoever the prophecy is intended for, but this is not usually who the prophecy is told to.

Ritual Magic

Eden's ritual magic usually follows a specific pattern - sacrifice, ritual, retribution.

Sacrifice: A sacrifice of blood is made; this sacrifice correlates to how much the spell will do. The bigger the spell, the bigger the sacrifice. Example: a spell to make the entire City's blood turned to dust took a whole heck of her blood. A spell to ward a room, on the other hand, take relatively little blood, particularly at it's casting.

Ritual: Each spell requires a ritual unless the spell is sealed. The ritual means that the caster reframes the world and reknots it, Irish Dera knots. The knot has to be traced out in blood, in it's particular pattern, which is something that must be studied before it is cast. If a mistake is made in the tracing or the ritual, the spell will go awry, because it's place in the universe has been written differently. A good metaphor is that the words they're there and their all sound the same but have different meanings, or that the word sweeter misspelled to sweater carries a different meaning.

Retribution: When the universe is touched or changed, it touches and changes back. Like a rubber band, the more it stretches to accomodate, the harder it will hit back when the spell is released - not broken, but when the ritual is complete. This causes extreme pain in various forms to the sacrifice (who can be anyone). Eden's left ear, for example, is completely blown out - she cannot hear in that ear. She has lost her sight because of spells, although that self corrected, and she has taken damage both interally and externally. The first retribution will always be that her old sacrifice scars open - that is the scars on her legs. The more intense the spell, the more retribution she faces.

Sealed Spells

A sealed spell is a spell that will remain permanently in use, or one that is so frequently used that she cannot afford to go through the ritual a each time. Eden has five of these spells in use. A sealed spell's ritual is complete when a scar with the shape of the spell appears on the casters body; Eden chooses her back so she doesn't have to remember that they are there, but they can appear anywhere that a caster chooses (her brother, for instance, places them on his hip). They are about two to five inches across, depending on the spell. Permanent ones are bigger, and and frequent use spells must be opened at each use (this can be done by will and magic alone). Eden's spells are as follows:

Athair: Eden's first sealed spell is a permanent spell located in the small of her back. It is the spell she used to steal her father's magic and bind it within herself.

Bogadh: Eden's second sealed spell is one she uses frequently - transportation. It's located on her back near her hip on the right side. When she opens this spell she can move from place to place in seconds.

Folaigh: Eden's third spell is concealment, located on her left shoulder. She can hide things; small items and herself with this spell.

Breithniú: Eden's fourth spell is a permanent spell, located below her left shoulderblade. It allows her to look at someone and see what is hidden in their blood - for example: she can tell someone's blood sugar level, or if they're taking medicines, or if they have power in their DNA (located in blood). This spell is a little bit off in the City (infomodding = bad)

Crith talún: Rictor's spell is a permanent spell located under her neckline directly over her spine.

These spells can only be broken if the skin is permanently marred either through cutting or burning. If they are sliced cleanly off her skin, the permanent spells will remain in affect.

Abilities

Eden's magic primarily affects blood, or what Eden perceives as blood (DNA, for example), and her spacial awareness, which is tied to her family's initial need to be everywhere they could at once with as much as they could carry without drawing attention. For example: Eden will never be able to use magic to levitate things, to read minds, or to make things explode. Her magic will never work on an elemental level. Her wards do not stop someone from entering a place through force (although they can keep someone of the blood from entering by simply barring the blood; in this case of the blood refers to her direct family line) but rather conceal a place.

Eden can change the nature of blood. In her opinion blood holds memory; these memories are often importantly stored within DNA. She can change blood to acid, or to dust by changing the compounds in blood, or she can cause blood to superheat or supercool.

She can effectively reboot blood; make it so that the blood is the same as it was when someone was a different age.

She can change someone's blood; if an ability is borne in blood, she can dismantle it or suppress it, or she can heighten it.

She can also manipulate the magic of someone else of the blood - that is to say, her family.

The Sid

If the Sid takes over, it negates Eden's ability to feel pain, meaning it can do a lot more powerful things. This is why Eden is afraid of it, because the Sid has no issue with pain or with death. That said, if the Sid is awake and active, it can moves people's blood or suppress abilities without the use of ritual. This is because it can negate ritual through higher acts of retribution and sacrifice because it does not feel pain. This is bad for Eden; when she awakes it can cause intense fits of prophecy, rage, fear, pain, and illness. However it is also important to know that Eden can give the Sid access to her body whenever she wants to - but she doesn't want to. And finally, and most important: while Eden describes the Sid as someone else, it is essentially Eden. It is the pure magic of her family line and the spirit of the fae, but there is nothing else in Eden except for Eden.

PLAYER NOTES:

Nothing that Eden does to another character can be done without permission and all spells that have been cast on any character were done with permission. I have no issue discussing permissions and what can or cannot happen. If I ask you if you want to do a spell, please do not feel obligated to say yes if it is something you are not comfortable with.

If you have a problem with any spell she casts - on herself, on someone else, on a place, please take it up with me or the person the spell was cast on in a critique thread or AIM. I have no issue discussing it with anyone.

Finally, as usual, player preference overrules all; both mine and others.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
