Back with Part 2. Let's go !
EP 5 -
She doesn’t answer when Yoon-seo asks just who it is she’s looking for. Soo-hyun’s purposeful visits to the NFS has Yoon-seo surmise that the man in question must either be someone she misses dearly or that she wants to confirm his death.
UGH. Foreboding. I know what this means - this means the lovely Lee Jae Han might actually die. No, wait - most likely he is dead. UGH.
He’d also been stuck with the task of confronting Soo-hyun in the night duty room, where he reminded her that the moment she put on that police uniform meant that everyone was treated the same, regardless of gender. So she better not pull the ladies card on them again, he’d warned.
Not actually ignoring the fact that she is a woman. Excellent. A woman wrote this drama right ? If it is a man - EVEN BETTER. I encourage Korea to be more progressive in their thinking towards feminism, equality, human rights ... patriarchy too.
Oh wow, someone set Lee up and ... he's missing too. Something terrible must have happened in EP 1. :( :( :( :( :(
Section Chief Ahn learns that the evidence regarding Jae-han’s case was long disposed of-on July 27, to be exact. That’s the same day Hae-young found the walkie-talkie in the back of the disposal truck… which is what Section Chief Ahn sees when reviewing the CCTV footage of that night at 11:23 PM.
NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Hae Young better not die as well ...
While the cold case squad is awarded for their efforts in solving the South Gyeonggi serial murders, Hae-young is still fixated on the well-placed details used to frame Jae-han for bribery: a key witness, pictures, and physical evidence-everything seems nicely packaged into a neat, little bow.
Yep, kid. Also if anything, it is insider dealings and corruption that always makes for a good story. Cause us audience want to see these people in power for the wrong reasons come crumbling down. Same thing with my love for City Hunter - what a great drama.
Anyhow, 11. 23 is such a nice timing - I love odd numbers and night time is just the perfect time for such crazy (and spooky) events to occur.
To that, Jae-han tells him to use his profiling skills then--it’s not like catching a petty thief will endanger world peace or anything. At the end of the day, they have to catch the bad guys, don’t they?
Am glad that both parties realise the consequences of their actions. Lee Jae Han knows it well as it cuts close to heart and Hae Young ... he finds that he has an additional responsbility since it would technically affect all those in the future, which is technically his present.
Soo-hyun is slightly amused when she returns to work to find Detective Kim and Heon-ki list out their team’s “future” aka all the unsolved cases in Korea.
Now the team is raring to go ! Just love the camaderie amongst them. ^^ Slow and steady builds the Cold Case Team's momentum.
That Oh Kyung Tae appearance from behind just freaked me out. Jump scares !
Soo-hyun steps on Hae-young’s foot before it goes any deeper into his mouth, as Director Kim orders to find the suspect within 24 hours, their prime window of opportunity. Section Chief Ahn mobilizes every cop to focus on this case, then punches Hae-young for acting like a hotshot.
Hae-young counters that he forgot how hard it was to get through to people here, a comment that earns him a swift kick to the shin. Soo-hyun apologizes on Hae-young’s behalf, and Section Chief Ahn tells him to get lost.
He should’ve tried harder to convince the other cops otherwise, but if he keeps up his hot-headed attitude, no one will listen to him. And if that’s the case, more people could lose their lives.
xyz
Poor Lee Jae Han - again we have to see him sobbing cause he arrested the wrong guy and that guy's daughter died. Wrecked with guilt once when he was too late in saving a life, now he finds himself indirectly causing the death of a young girl and the lifetime of sadness for a father. Sigh, these mini family stories always get me right where it already hurts. T__________T
Speaking of timelines, it would help if we knew what the timeline in the present was, other than being occasionally told that we’re still in 2015. Ever since the first episode, I had a hard time placing what month and year we were, especially when the law concerning the abolishment of the statute of limitations was passed. Again in this episode, we were given hints that it was mid-October or early November or that a week had passed between transmissions. To the show’s credit, a part of me wonders that we’re meant to follow more of the past, as the changes made there affects the present Hae-young lives in. It must still be weird for him to remember past events change overnight, and everyone on his team thinks nothing of it.
Much confusion. So lost. (Am not doing Doge meme right.)
EP 6 -
And then the saddest thing happens: Eun-ji opens her eyes and looks up at her father. Oh god, she was still alive.
There’s a spark and then the bus bursts into flames. Shock hits first, then inconsolable grief.
Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
That is just too cruel, Show. HOW COULD YOU, SHOW ? ! ?
Horror washes over Hae-young’s face as he realizes that Oh Kyung-tae’s plan was to use a spark from the refrigerant to cause an electrical fire and kill Yeo-jin’s father. But now Soo-hyun’s life is in danger too, as she shoots the lock to open the doors, and tells Yeo-jin’s father to stand back.
Hae-young breaks into a run as Soo-hyun climbs into the truck. Another team finds Yeo-jin shivering in the back of another truck, and Soo-hyun turns on the switch to light up the darkened truck.
“No! Move!” Hae-young cries. Soo-hyun turns her head just as the spark ignites, and the sudden combustion illuminates the truck and throws Hae-young backwards. Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.
At first I was all - WHAT THE ACTUAL F ? ? ? ? ?
But then, when later on I calmed down a little, I realised that this only meant that Show was brillant. The writers are geniuses. Only when you have clearly thought out the full plot and timeline of all the parts to this drama can you actually be CONFIDENT enough to kill off a main character.
It’s at that moment Hae-young recalls the hope he instilled in Jae-han to find the true burglar. “If we find the culprit…” Hae-young starts. “… the future can be changed,” Jae-han finishes.
Because, there is always a possibility to bring that character back. (Especially when the character is a lead and she happens to be Kim Hye Soo.)
It doesn’t matter to Jae-han if Se-kyu is the chief prosecutor’s son-he wants a warrant for Se-kyu’s arrest.
There we go. The real corruption scandal / story begins ...
Seeing the man actually responsible brought to justice is to achieve true revenge, Hae-young continues. Shouldn’t they see that the culprit pay for his crimes? “I’ll help you. If I have your cooperation, we can catch him.” Hae-young stresses.
He takes Oh Kyung-tae’s hands in his and pleads, “No, I need your help. We must catch him.”
Way to go in turning tables and though Hae Young is quite the emotional officer, he knows that it is his emotional affinity for and with people that helps him to succeed in acquiring information, arresting the baddies and solving the cases once and for all.
Nearly every character feels a different kind of helplessness in this episode, from Oh Kyung-tae unable to do anything to save his daughter to Yeo-jin’s father who was at the mercy of his daughter’s kidnapper to Hae-young watching the truck combust before his eyes and Jae-han restricted by the law enforcement system and class divide. It broke my heart when Jae-han had asked if the world had changed any twenty years later, because it hadn’t-men like Se-kyu are still living comfortable lives in the present with little regard for the ordinary man.
WHAT DO WE WANT ? JUSTICE TO BE SERVED !
WHEN DO WE WANT IT ? ALL THE GODDAMNED TIME !
Even though Hae-young and Jae-han have only shared a few transmissions, I liked that we finally got to see an active teamwork in play. When Jae-han was sure Oh Kyung-tae wouldn’t meet with him, Hae-young offered to find out what he could in the present. This is the kind of teamwork that excites me, with both the past and present racing against the clock before they lose any more precious time. Because if the past changes, so does the present.
Thank you Gummimochi, you always know what we are thinking - incredibly important since this show is all about racking the brains.
EP 7 -
As it turns out, Soo-hyun had called in sick, and Hae-young had run out, utterly relieved.
Felt like crying tears of joy. Ms Cha would never know that she actually died in another parallel and as an audience member, I feel that being privy to such information just makes it all the more bittersweet for us.
Soo-hyun’s mother wastes no time trying to gauge if her daughter’s handsome colleague might be a suitable match for Soo-hyun, who argues that his visit means that work is a mess without her.
CUTE HAHA ^^ I finally can smile after such a harrowing previous episode
He passes the moment off as a joke, then asks if she remembers telling him that if he received a transmission from the past, it’s better to try to do everything he can instead of living in regret even if doing so mucked everything up.
He disagrees with that now, saying that he thinks one should never pick up a transmission like that because “it really can… ruin everything.”
Man, won't you stop with these quips. Ms Cha must be feeling very puzzled about your soliloquies.
Hae-young has his mind made up, as he shreds Jae-han’s profile and the case files on his disappearance, and throws the walkie-talkie away as well.
NUUUUU DON'T DO THAT
Section Chief Ahn watches Hae-young take out the trash, then ruffles through the bag and pulls out the walkie-talkie, which has a yellow smiley face sticker on the bottom.
UGH YOU SEE I TOLD YOU SO
That sticker is important because Section Chief Ahn remembers that Soo-hyun was the one who put that on Jae-han’s walkie-talkie. Aha, so Jae-han and Hae-young are speaking to each other via the same radio.
Wow. Okay. It did not occur to me that they were using the same exact walkie talkie, which is all very coincidental and also rather poignant.
(TBC - my head is actually wonky from reliving this drama.)
