A while back, I thought up a story for a K drama (which I hope doesn't get stolen) but here I am sharing it with the World Wide Web. Yep.
Basically it's about this family with this dad and mum who own a dating / match-making agency. I just thought of the name of the company - Seong Gong (literally "success" cause I know Koreans love their punny dramas) and it is a combi of the dad's surname (IMMA name him Seong Si Kyung for the time being because ... LOL IDK) and the mum's (just Gong Dae Pyo / Manager Gong cause she's straight-laced).
Seong Dad and Gong Mum have been divorced for years, but have been living together despite the divorce. This is because they have to keep up the facade that is driving their business - they are practically the faces of their own company, so they have to keep the divorce under wraps (fairly well done) and also pretend to like each other still. Additionally, they own half the company each, so for them to have control of the whole business, they need to know each other's business. (GET IT ?) The falling out I can't quite put a finger on it yet (CAUSE I HAVEN'T THOUGHT ABOUT THAT) but it has something to do with Dad's frivolous ways (not so much flirty but yet sort of) and Mum's no-nonsense psyche. When you thought they already have enough on their hands, the plot expands to include their chaebol kids.
Older son (Oppa for now) is a keen businessman, possessing lots of street-smartness but has no interest in the dating industry because he can't see how it could be any more lucrative than it is. Plus he doesn't believe in the notion of love, having grown up with liars (see: divorced parents) and having been rejected by his first love. (DAMN - even I can't avoid drama cliches.) So he's trying to make it big on his own but a lot of the capital comes from Dear Mummy. Mum though, doesn't want her son to work for anyone else (or himself, for that matter) and would like her son (who's very much like her in the way he goes about doing business) to take over the company.
Enter younger daughter (Noona for now): she's Daddy's little girl and Dad's contender for the running of heir to the Seong Gong conglomerate. As with the mother-son pair, the pops-and-princess duo couldn't be more alike - Noona may not deny "the notion of love", but she's not the best advocate either, considering her history with men. She's had more boyfriends than she can count on her hands and would rather not stick to just one dude because it bores her. So, commitment issues. (I guess I could factor that in for Dad as well.) That and she's a little bit ditzy, making her an unlikely candidate in general. But between the single one and the (usually) attached person, the committee / board members (THERE'S BOUND TO BE SOME SUITED AHJUSSI-S AND AHJUMMA-S AROUND) are probably gonna vote for the latter to be Seong Gong's ambassador.
So Mum tries to brainwash and groom the son (usually the inheritor, as seen in SOOOOO many K dramas), all the while saying that if he doesn't comply (and get married to a woman she approves of), then she's gonna kick him out of the house and let him live on the streets. Something like that. I much prefer a better way to threaten him cause I think he's gonna be unfazed by all this. I want the stubbornness level for these 2 to match, so that the conflict lies in how they never give in to each other, and maybe some one-up-ances as well. Hilarious ones, of course.
As for Noona, Dad threatens to cut her allowance (she needs it for shopping and to manage her men - LOL), unless she obeys him and passes that damned business administration course in uni, so that she will be academically qualified for the CEO role and for him to appease the board members. Of course - the catch being that she is already 30 and last stepped into school at 18. The bottomline is that she's the total opposite of her Oppa and hence ... one wonders why the family just produced yet another sparring couple for TV.
WAIT OMG I realised there isn't a reason for the kids to take over the company ! O.O Nobody is dying so why would it matter ?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I guess I have to go back and tweak this a bit. :(
Still, let me go on to their love interests, because that's all that really matters right ? (YES THAT'S WHAT YOU WOULD WANT TO KNOW)
To delay the inheritment (?) of the company (I'LL BE DAMNED this story is getting from worse to WORST), Oppa decides to search for a suitable wife, since he isn't that keen on being schooled in the Seong Gong business methods. By doing this he'll be able to get some money, of which he has already been secretly siphoning out (eeeee) from his current bank account to another account that will fund his business. That business is ... probably gonna do with food (knowing me - I'm an eating monster) or a dokkpukki restaurant. Something ridiculous but F&B-based. While researching for his dokkpukki business (I'M SOLD), he meets the daughter of a popular dokkpokki outlet whom he doesn't fall in love with immediately (WHERE'S THE FUN IN THAT !) but is instantly drawn to. Cause 1) she smells like dokkpukki and 2) she couldn't be a better choice since she could be his head chef of his new diner and 3) to bring home as his (fake) wifey. Anything so that he can fulfill his dream of a Korean snack eatery. (Ahh ~)
Let's call her DPK Girl for now.
But DPK Girl is taking none of his BS and sees him as a potential competitor, rather than future husband material. OF COURSE THERE'LL BE HIJINKS and they will be the bickering couple-kind (irks me that I've reduced them to such stereotypes - but only for now), although that will change once they see the beauty in each other. Regardless of dokkpukki's influence or not. Hee. (I'll admit I have yet to flesh out this couple's development, but I must also admit everything about this story is in its baby stages, other than the confirmation of the characters. Mostly.)
Right, moving on to the next mess that is Noona and her younger love interest. And for convenience sake, he shall be named Yeo Jin Goo.
(AHA ALL MY PEDO NOONA TENDENCIES ARE OVERFLOWING HERE)
So Noona heads to school and already she's got a reputation because it turns out that she's dated quite a lot of guys (one every month - or do you guys prefer fortnightly / weekly romancing ?), some of them uni students and some, brothers of the uni students. (LOL) At first people are piqued because news also gets around that she's gonna be the heiress to Seong Gong, so everyone's trying to date her. Even girls. (YESSS) But soon they avoid her like plague cause she's crap at studying (yep our K students have got their priorities right) and she's just pulling their grades down. Noona is duly worried because she's becoming 1) friendless, which she's super concerned about and 2) dead broke, if Dad finds out she's barely scraping by in class.
Enter Yeo Jin Goo (now - oops), who's a genius. Like IQ 180 genius, cause that's apparently how smart the actor for Prince Yul (Goong) was. No ?
YJG is smart and young and Noona needs an extremely reliable person to get her cashflow back. Naturally she tries to work her prowess on the kid, only to be rebuffed by his mature digs at her lack of brains (ouch, but I like that HAH) and her lack of determination to see anything through. (I'm base-ing this off her string of lovers and her shit track record in school.) But of course, as with every couple in every K drama, they will eventually get together, the minor deets inexplicable as for now. ("As for now" - something I've reiterated to death in this post, I see.)
But but but I have in my imagination arsenal, a couple of scenarios I want to see in the end product, including a tuition sesh between Noona and YJG (Noona beyond exasperation when she can't remember all the business theories and would rather teach YJG the business ways she knows - something to do with negotiating her way out of awkward breakups and sourcing for new partners - like boyfriend-partners). Then there's also a meet-the-parents sesh for Oppa and DPK Girl, where the latter expects a harrowing experience, but rather would encounter an unusual family setup that would puzzle her to no end. Like Dad trying to charm her socks off and proposing to her, so that she won't consider Oppa and will therefore thwart Mum's plans. Anything for the other to fail ... I'm already in love with the possibilities.
One more: Noona sis and Oppa consulting each other on how to deal with their love interests. Do YJG & DPK Girl have to be related ? They can't be siblings because it will be too obvious a love square, but how else should they go about knowing each other ? It would be nice to know that YJG and DPK Girl have each other to fight against the Seong Gong family, but IDK man. Maybe they could be cousins once-removed. Make that twice.
Or maybe that support will be down to the siblings. Like Noona helping her bro by being all sisterly with DPK Girl and vice-versa with the bromance. OR maybe Seong Dad tries to undermine the relationship by talking shit (of his own son ?!?!?) to DPK Girl and Mum will scare her way out with YJG.
I wonder how do writers go about writing scripts - story first or character backgrounds ? There's just so much to take into consideration that even I have to applaud their brains. Creative writing is one thing --- creative writing for TV is no mean feat. Kudos to all the writers of my favourite dramas. Without you guys, life is nothing. >>> Ultimately, I hope that this show can be a focus on love, both the relationship and familial kind. Of course most people will want to see the couple stuff happen and that's bound to be the attraction of any kind of rom-com, but what I want is that 20% of the viewership ratings. Yes, this unnie here will have her pie (chart) and eat it. Something like that.
EDIT
Just realised I got messed up while writing my own drama: the siblings WOULD NOT WANT TO HELP EACH OTHER ! They need the money too badly for their own endeavours to give it up to the opposition ! So what now ? How do I make this more logical ? ? ?
