It was like she was being stabbed in the heart , the knife twisting and turning painfully, and yet…at the same time… she felt the said heart soar, and inside, she was thrilled, happy…relieved…
If someone were to ever ask her what she was feeling when she saw him again, for the first time in months ( but it felt like years), that’s the only way she could think to describe it.
As she sat there in the library that night, she stared blankly at the books in front of her, deep in thought. No one dared to say anything after they had gotten back, although she knew they were saying things in hushed whispers in the halls, Henry’s lab, in their rooms. She knew.
The sound of the door to the library opening startled her out of her thoughts, and she looked over to see Kate and Henry enter. They were talking, their heads close together, her arm hooked in his. Helen smiled. When they saw her they paused.
“Oh uh… sorry. We didn‘t mean to intrude. We can…” Helen laughed at Henry and shook her head.
“You two aren‘t intruding Henry. This is a communal library. Take a seat. Both of you.” she patted the empty space on the couch next to her. They looked at each other, shrugged, and sat down. Helen couldn’t help herself, she slyly watched the pair, and a pang ran through her heart. She had suspected that Kate had a fondness for Henry that wasn’t the same as her fondness for the rest of them, and seeing them there , sitting, laughing, the look she gave him, her suspicions were correct. And the way he looked at her, the way he watched out for her, his tendency to ask how she was doing before anyone else on the missions he didn’t accompany them on…
Kate and Henry were quite possibly in love.
Oh dear.
Now it wasn’t like she didn’t want that to happen for the both of them. Lord knows they need, nay, deserve, to have some happiness in their lives but… She couldn’t help but wonder if love in this place was doomed from the beginning. It wasn’t for the weak of heart. It wasn’t for the strong ones either, now that she thought about it. It’s just…people who lived there seemed to have bad luck with love. Will with Clara, Henry with Rachel, her with… Her breath caught in her throat. No. No she mustn’t think about it, him, not now. Not when everyone already was talking. A laugh from Kate snapped Helen, once more, out of her deep thoughts, and she looked over at them. Kate was still laughing, her arms entwined in Henry’s right arm, her left hand swatting his arm playfully. Henry was smiling and saying something in a hushed tone that she couldn’t pick up. They looked happy.
She was glad. So glad that, for the first time in awhile, a genuine smile graced her features. She looked at them , and instead of seeing a couple that was utterly doomed to become enemies, provocations to each other, secretly still madly in love , but both too stubborn , too conflicted, to resolve things, she saw something different.
She saw hope. And it was shining brightly through her foster son and newest recruit. She thought that maybe, just maybe, things would be alright.
“Well, I think I‘ll turn in for the night. Good night you two. ” Helen announced, getting up from her seat and walking towards the door. Nothing. “Don‘t forget to put out the fire in the fireplace when you‘re done in here.”
“Yeah, sure, you betcha.” Kate replied, not looking at her.
“You got it Magnus.” Henry said, a little clearer. Helen laughed, shaking her head, she left, feeling better than before.
“Do you think it worked?” Kate asked after Helen left. Henry rolled his eyes and laughed.
“Yeah, she looked happier. She was genuinely smiling.” Henry put an arm around Kate and pulled her closer, Kate rested her head on his shoulder.
“She knows about us , doesn‘t she?”
“Probably. She‘s very ah…observant.” Henry smiled at her, and she smiled back. “She won‘t tell, if that‘s what you‘re wondering.” Kate gave him a look of mock hurt.
“I know she won‘t.” she replied. “I‘m just happy to see her smiling. It looks good on her.”
“Yeah.” Henry replied absentmindedly. “Hey Kate…”
“Yeah Hank?”
“Isn‘t that my shirt you‘re wearing?” Kate looked down at her outfit and a blushed crept through her face.
“Oh God…this isn’t one of your most used ones is it? Would anyone recognize it and know it was yours?”
“Yeah, they would.”
“Shit.”
“Yeah.”
“Cat’s out of the bag.” Kate said, looking at the fire. “Or should I say werewolf?” Henry rolled his eyes.
“Funny. You‘re very very funny.” Kate laughed and leaned up, giving him a quick kiss.
“Ah, well, the sneaking around was fun while it lasted.” She said, getting up and stretching.
“Where are you going?” Henry asked, his face sad, like a puppy’s. Kate laughed. “Laughing at my anguish are you Freelander? God, why am I with you again?” he joked.
“Well, I need to change my shirt, since this is yours. You could come and help me pick one out. We could have a fashion show.” she replied, seemingly innocent, but that devilish look in her eyes said otherwise. Henry smirked. He set down the book he had been reading, put the fire in the fireplace out, and walked over to her.
“Alright, but if I don’t like it, I get to take it off.”
The End.
