Angela was mischevous that day...
Bones knew that Angela would find out some how. That’s just how Angela was. Some how she managed to learn every little secret, dirty or not, about the scientists ( and FBI Agents) that worked at the Jeffersonian. It was a tad creepy, Bones had to admit, how Angela seemed to know everything about the emotions of the people around her.
That’s why, in the second week of January, when Angela Pearly Gates Montenegro ( soon to add a -Hodgins), came storming into Bones’ office, arms crossed, a look that seemed to incorporate shock, amusement, and smugness all in one helping, Bones knew what was coming to her. Bones tried to look busy, ignoring her Irish/Chinese friend’s powerful atmosphere. Angela’s foot tapping against the hard flooring in the office, plus a heavy sigh made Bones finally look up after a few minutes.
“Yes Angela?” Bones asked, trying to look confused for once about the situation.
“ Why didn‘t you tell me? ” Angela came all the way into the room, and marched right next to her friend’s swivel chair.
“Tell you about what?”
“You know very well what! I can‘t believe I had to hear about it from Dr. Sweets of all people!” Bones’ head shot up.
“ Dr. Sweets told you about what happened on Christmas Eve?! That’s breaking Doctor- Patient Confidentiality! He’s not supposed to do that!”
“I can be very intimidating sweetie. I noticed when he came into my office this morning to give me his profile for the latest suspect, he was hiding something.” she smirked. ”And slowly, with the right questions, I got it out of him. ” Angela plopped down on the couch and gave a slightly frustrated huff. “ Now sweetie, I know what happened, so now all you can do is spill.”
“ I don‘t know what that means.” Angela rolled her eyes.
“It means tell me what happened, why it happened, where it happened , and how long did it happen?” Angela didn’t look like she was leaving anytime soon.
“It… Caroline wouldn‘t give my father the visitor trailer for Christmas unless I agreed to… kiss him.” Angela’s eyes widened. “ She told me that I had to kiss him for , as she put it, ‘five steamboats’ otherwise, no deal. ”
“ Alright Caroline. Gotta remember to send her a gift basket.” Angela’s smile just widened. “ Continue your story dear.”
“ Anyway , it was Christmas Eve , and Booth came to talk to me about the victim‘s counterfeiting business, and I was hanging up mistletoe in my office…it was part of the deal. I told him what Caroline said and he told me that he would talk to her but there was no point. Caroline was going to be there soon and it was just a kiss, so I told him not to bother. ” Angela’s cocked an eyebrow. “ It‘s just a kiss! It doesn‘t mean anything!”
“ Hostility…interesting…” Angela pondered aloud. Bones felt the blood run to her cheeks.
“ I‘m not being hostile Angela.” Bones sighed. “ Anyway, Caroline came into my office and told me what I wanted to hear, that my father was going to get his trailer. So I …held up my end of the bargain.” Angela’s smirk returned.
“ And?” she asked, fiddling with the necklace she had on. Gift from Jack. It was from Africa….but that’s another story.
“And what? That‘s what happened.” Bones picked up some files and put them into a filing cabinet. “ We kissed, she left, then Booth left, and that was it.” Angela gave an exasperated sigh. “ What?”
“ Sweetie! I need details here! You kissed your Knight in standard issue FBI armor and you didn‘t feel…anything? What was it like? Was there tongue?” by now, Angela was standing up, hands on her hips, and the foot was tapping again.
“Angela! That‘s none of your business!” Bones snapped. Angela’s eyes widened and her mouth fell open.
“ Oh…my…god! There was! Oh my god oh my god! Oh you French kissed Booth!” Angela began jumping up and down, squealing happily. “ You Frenched Booth!” Her squealing turned into a school girl style snicker , like she just heard some major secret and she was the only one who knew…besides Sweets and Caroline of course.
“Angela! It‘s not that big of a deal!” Angela stopped dancing and looked at Bones, completely deadpan.
“Not a big deal? Not a big deal? Hun, do you even know how much sexual tension bounces off the two of you when you are together? Its wild. ” Bones rolled her eyes. “Sweetie, think about it. What is one of the first thing almost everyone thinks when they first meet you two?” Bones blushed. “ Exactly. Sweetie there is something there between the two of you, and you just seem so…blind.”
“Blind? Angela there is nothing there, no matter what you think. We work together, we‘re friends. I kissed him in order to get my father a trailer for Christmas so that my family could be together.”
“Wait…so it did work out…what about Russ? Didn‘t you say his girls didn‘t know he was in jail?”
“ Got him civilian clothing and bluffed to the girls.” Bones said, matter-of-factly.
“What about the tree? I know you aren‘t allowed to have Christmas trees in a conjugal trailer, with all the pointy objects. The girls must have been disappointed.” Bones smiled, Angela was steering away from her questioning about the kiss, which was fine with her.
“ Well at first we didn‘t have one but then I got this call from Booth when I was there and he told me to look outside. When I did, I saw him, Parker, and a lit Christmas tree in the abandoned parking lot next to the prison. The girls , dad, Russ, and Amy all loved it and it was the perfect gi..” Bones stopped . Wait a second…. “ Angela…where‘s Booth?” Angela shrugged.
“Dunno, he came in earlier, gave us a new piece of evidence, and left. He has Parker this week-end. They‘re going camping.” Angela smiled pleasantly. Booth was a good father.
“Was this before or…after Dr. Sweets came in?”
“Before.” Angela said, exasperated. Gosh Bones was stubborn.
“So you didn‘t know at all that asking about the trailer would lead me to talk about Booth…again…?” Angela shook her head. “Right.”
“ Any who, you were saying? Something about a tree, and the Booths, and something being perfect about it all ?” there was that smirk again.
“He was being thoughtful. That‘s all. He knew my family wasn‘t going to have a tree, and he knew Russ and Amy‘s kids would be there, and being a father, knew it would be important. That‘s all. ” Angela sighed. She gave up.
“Fine sweetie. I give up.” She gave Bones a hug and began to walk to the door, but she stopped. “ Just…please…answer me this… was he a good kisser?” It was Bones’ turn to smirk now.
“ What do you think?” she asked, that blush returning a bit.
“ Sweetie, if you even knew what scenarios I worked up in my mind about Booth before I started dating Hodgins were, you‘d know my answers.” Angela gave Bones a wink and walked out of the office. Bones rolled her eyes and started at her computer again. About five hours later, Bones looked up from the skeleton on the cold slab in front of her, to the sounds of Parker Booth laughing and his father trying to control him. She saw Booth hand his son the id card to swipe into the reader, and Parker did so, beaming as the reader gave the green to go. He bounded up the stairs, his father right behind him.
“ Hey Booth…hello Parker.” she smiled. Parker pulled something from the bag he had with him and handed it to her. She looked at the sight before her. A small present, with a very unique wrapping paper around it.
“Bones wrapping paper for the bone lady.” Parker said, beaming. He was obviously proud of himself. “It‘s a Christmas present. For you. I found it in a gift shop when I went skiing. Mom thought it was strange , what I found. But that‘s because it was unusual to have that stuff where we were.”
“Thank you Parker.” Bones felt touched. He bought it for her?
“Parker showed it to me when he got back, asked me if I thought it was ok, and I did. I think you‘ll really like it . ” the older Booth pulled his son up into his arms and smiled.
Bones gently unwrapped the present and saw a small, long jewelry box inside. She opened the jewelry box and gasped slightly. It was a silver necklace with little silver dolphins worked into the chain. She felt touched , and slightly confused about what was happening right now. Here she was, a scientist, a rational thinker, top of her class, one of the best forensic anthropologists in the world, and yet, with all that training, she couldn’t explain what exactly it was that was leaving her speechless at the moment. Parker, a six year old boy , the son of her partner and best friend, got her a dolphin necklace. The fact that he thought of her while on a trip with his mother and her boyfriend, and got her a gift, one with meaning… she was at a loss for words. She looked up at Parker, who was looking at her from the safety of his father’s grasp, and his father was fallowing suit. She started when she heard Parker speaking, a sound of hurt and disappointment in his voice.
“ She doesn’t like it daddy. She‘s crying.” Parker looked hurt, but Seeley shook his head.
“ No buddy, she isn‘t crying because she doesn‘t like it, she‘s crying because dolphins mean a lot to her, for reasons I can‘t tell you, at least… not yet. She likes it , she‘s just touched by the gesture.”
“ Is that true Bones?” Parker asked, looking hopeful. Bones nodded, taking the necklace out of the box and putting it on.
“Thank you. Thank you very much Parker. I love it.” Parker’s face lit up and his smile was contagious. Bones caught herself noticing that his smile matched his father’s. Charming, yet subtle at the same time. Just like both of the Booth’s personalities.
“Cool. Wanna come eat dinner with us Bones? We‘re going to Wong Fu‘s.” Seeley put Parker down and smiled one of those charming smiles of his that he reserved just for her.
“Yeah Bones. Sid hasn‘t seen Parker in awhile , and you and me always seem to eat at the diner now. I‘m sure Sid would be happy to see us there.” Bones rolled her eyes, but smiled.
“Fine. I‘ll come. ” Parker made a noise of excitement and ran down to the entrance.
“Parker! Buddy don‘t go out of the building!” Booth shouted at his son, who already rounded the corner. He sighed.
“ You have a good son Booth . You are raising him right.” Bones said, as they walked over to her office to get her stuff.
“Thank you Bones.” As they were leaving walking towards the double doors, Booth remembered something “ Oh, Angela…she didn‘t get to you did she?” Bones looked genuinely confused. “ Earlier this morning, I came in after Sweets called me on my cell phone, saying he had just dropped off his criminal profile for our suspect.. Some how Angela got the whole incident with Caroline over Christmas out of him. She grilled me when I came in. She wouldn’t turn the Angelater on until I answered all her questions. ” he laughed “ So she didn‘t get to you did she?” Bones stopped. They had reached the main entrance and there was Parker , talking to Angela and Jack , who had their coats and other personal items with them. Angela was smiling and Jack was laughing.
“You came in…after Dr. Sweets came in?” Bones asked Booth as they started to walk again.
“Yeah…why? Is there something wrong?” Bones saw Angela straighten up as wave to them.
“Well Parker, hun, me and Jack want to continue this conversation sometime. Sound good?” Parker nodded. “Cool. How about , if your father says yes of course, you come to the estate and go swimming at the pool like you did last summer?” Parker nodded vigorously. “ Awesome. Sounds like a plan. Well Hodgy, we better be off. Bye Booth! Bye Sweetie!” Angela waved and she and Jack walked out the door. Bones clucked at her friend’s antics. Sneaky antics.
“Well…shall we go?” Booth asked her, smiling. Bones nodded and they headed out the door towards Booth’s car.
Come Monday, Bones was going to have a little…talk with her best friend.
