Checklist

You made it! You got your admission to study at BTU Cottbus. We congratulate you. Before you can start studying there are a few things that need to be done. We made the following checklist for you. It shall help you to remember the most important things.

BEFORE LEAVING:

● Entry formalities! Is your passport still valid?

● If you are not from an EU Member State you need a student visa to study in Germany. You have to apply for a visa before leaving. The German embassy in your home country can inform you on the necessary documents

● Please prepare your travel carefully and make sure to arrive at least one week before the lectures at BTU start. So that you can participate in the orientation week, where you will get to know the campus and the city. Information on the orientation week can be found here: www.otiwo.de

● Do you have enough information about Cottbus, BTU and Germany?

● Look early for an accommodation in Cottbus. Further informationen can be found below.

● In case you study a course taught entirely in English, have you got enough knowledge of the German language for the general communication?

● Get information about the German Customs Authority ("Zoll") and their prohibitions and restrictions. Pack dutiable things separate from your other baggage. Further information on the German Customs Authority- Zoll can be found here: http://www.zoll.de/english_version/index.html

● Make sure that you take enough cash with you for the first days in Cottbus. Thus you can cover the costs for the Studentenwerk, the foreigners office, food etc.

● Make copies of your passport/identity card, your visa and all important documents!

LIVING ON CAMPUS

The BTU Cottbus is a compact university with several dormitories on campus. You can choose between different room types which are run by the Studentenwerk Frankfurt Oder. Find the link to their webpage below, where you can obtain more information.

Please see to finding a place in advance. Do not rely on getting a room in a hall of residence, you are not the only student who applies for a room.

LIVING OFF CAMPUS

In Germany it is common that students live by themselves or together with friends. If 3 or more people share a flat it is called a 'WG' (Wohngemeinschaft - flat-sharing community). You can find offers for accommodation all around the campus on the message boards or in newspapers, and of course on the internet.

A FEW NIGHTS STAY

Try to avoid arriving in Cottbus late in the night, or on sundays and national holidays, because in Germany the shops are closing early (around 8 p.m.) and offices and shops are closed on Sundays and holidays.
