I love the brilliant colours, you have such a great touch with colour, it's vibrant and sings out, but isn't over the top. I love the intentness/focus in his pose/expression too.
Thank you! It's funny, I'm always drawn to painting in vibrant colors. No idea why, but I'm glad I'm able to keep it before the point where it's too much. (I actually have some questionable oil paintings I did for school where I know I went too far with my color choices XD)
I love how you manage to do that with watercolour too. One of the main reasons I'm not usually a fan of watercolour that it usually seems to look very anaemic, but you manage to avoid that.
I know what you mean! I see so many watercolor that are just so, watery. Not that it isn't lovely, it just feels more like a 'sketch' to me than a finished piece of art. But thta's just me.
When I work with watercolor my ratio of pigment to water is very skewed, which keeps it more robust. I prefer working with the paint when it's the consistency of a watery paste. Of course some of the brighter parts in this piece are from the scanner light beaming through (specifically on the mountains, rock background, and his cloak). It's a little darker in RL. Part of the joys of working with a transparent medium.
