dog breeds

Regarding my last post: the reason I said I would look for a Jack Russell mix or a daschund mix was because my brother has a Jack-Russell/Daschund/”Other” mix who I know well and who is a wonderful little dog ( Read more... )

I'm not going to suggest a breed, because I don't know what you're really looking for, aesthetically and personality. Most small dogs are terriers, small hounds, or toys. I don't know where your interest lies on those.

You will have to be careful if you decide to adopt a terrier simply because you do have small animals, and that is what they were bred for, not that you can't find an exception..

Also, if you decide to adopt from a shelter, just ask the workers about the dog, HOPEFULLY they will know the animals, and won't sugarcoat anything so you'll know exactly what you're getting into.

I just want a companion animal. I may even re-home my birds for the right dog. I've never had a dog of my own. My rats have their own room (I know, I spoil them, they live in my office)

Well, I would suggest looking into different breeds, and visiting different ones at local shelter (if you can/one in the area) Good luck, dogs are something different entirely, but I think you know that.

Thank you. Next week I'm going to the Lexington SPCA and I'm going to talk to a woman there who is over the small dogs.

I'm not a dog expert. I wasn't even particularly fond of dogs until about 4 years ago and am more interested in larger breeds.

Terriers as a whole might be a bad idea. People think they're cute and snuggely because they're small and fluffy, but they were bred by farmers to hunt and kill (what they percieved as) vermin. They have a lot of energy, tenacity, spunk and a prey drive for your critters. [The controversy with pit bull terriers like Lady is that prey drive was transfered onto dogs rather than critters]

Lady, however, is wonderful with small animals, dogs and cats. There's exceptions to rules and socialization can do wonders. Of course a pit bull is bigger than you want, just suggesting to make room for deviations in specific animals.

My parents have a Shih Tzu and its lazy. However, its also dumb. I'd rather have a cat than a small dumb dog. Less maintenance and more personality. But thats just me ( ... )

Thanks. Actually I feel better now and have since I started Prozac and lyrica than I ever have in my life and I'm walking 4 miles a day, to and from class.

I like some of the toy breeds. Aesthetics doesn't play much of a part, except for size. I just don't want a big dog. My neighbors have an elderly yellow lab named Bart who weighs a million pounds, and though I love him to death, I oculdn't live with a dog half the size as me. lol

If I get a dog it will be at least a few months down the road, so I need ot take in all the advice and research I can until (and if) that time comes.
