this afternoon, i was walking down minna between 2nd street and new montgomery. the alley, like most in this city, smelled heavily of urine on concrete under the hot sun. while strolling the small sidewalk, i had to step around a large old television. you know the kind where the screen is set into a larger box of wood panelling. the tv was kicked onto its side, but even at the awkward angle, it was hard to miss the 27" screen and the large cupboard-like area attached under it. like a built in entertainment center. it had to be from the 70's.
and i would have missed it had it not been protruding from the small area next to the dial nobs on the front.
an ashtray. but not just any ashtray. the kind like you used to find in Crown Victorias circa 1980. you know, the kind that pop out of the door or back of the front seat armrest. more popularly placed at the bottom of the dashboard under the stereo.
a fucking ashtray that pops out of the front of a television?
1. who sits that close to the television while smoking?
2. who thought to themselves, "i'm going to market a television with a built-in ashtray?"
