Wow - I've been sitting for hours with a big smile on my face every time I think about this fantastically kind comment, trying to work out how to respond! There has been happydancing. More than I should probably admit...

See, I think this is part of the problem for Jim: he's not used to waiting, and because he's not used to waiting, he can't really tell if he's waiting or just deluding himself. And he doesn't know how to ask the questions, because he's never had to before, and because he's proud, and because he's scared out of his mind that he won't like the answer. To me, the very things that make them such a strong couple - the mutual respect, the different outlooks that lead them to the same goals, and the massive, massive love - are the very things that make it so difficult for them to dance their way together. Because what if they've read it all wrong?

Oh God, I love character analysis (you might have noticed!) and it's always such a thrill to hear that I'm getting the boys right! "Realistic" is the best compliment I could hope for! Thank you so much.

Realistic is exactly what you've rendered, and rendered it quit well! This is precisely why you're attracting so much wonderful attention to this story: it's all in the style...style is EVERYTHING for a lot of readers...no matter what the premise entails, it's the element of writing style that nails it every time! We NEED to "see" Spock the way we remember him, the way he was written in TOS, the way those screenwriters from so long ago envisioned his character and the way the directors guided Leonard Nimoy's performance...both he and Kirk must be "seen" by the readers...not every author can carry that off as well as you have here...its all rather extraordinary, and not only that, wholly addictive! :D As for analyzing the characters, well, of course! What else is the lure behind K/S? The characters as well as their relationship, the dynamics, the way they are with each other, the subtle cues, the non-verbal language they speak...for indeed they DO speak a very special language, the same language all persons so deeply involved with one another speak...

I am waiting. I am waiting and enthralled with that wait...Jim, I believe, is enthralled as well...this is his destiny calling, on a whole different level...and when you watch that fabulous Medical Bay scene in TMP...you know it too...life calls to life, and for Jim, Spock is exactly that. Spock IS life. Jim's life, beyond a shadow of any discernible doubt...

Thank you so much! I just love writing this fic, and it's WONDERFUL to get feedback like this!

And that's a fantastic way of putting it: "Spock IS life. Jim's life, beyond a shadow of any discernable doubt..." Another reviewer on the Archives was talking about the theme of home in this chapter and it got me thinking about how Jim is basically "home" for Spock. I guess it's another way of saying they are each other's life. I identify more closely with Spock, I suppose, so this idea of finding "home" in another person has a lot of resonance for me. But it comes to the same thing: they are two halves of one whole. *happy sigh*

Just hijacking this thread to say I love everything that has been said within it.

"See, I think this is part of the problem for Jim: he's not used to waiting, and because he's not used to waiting, he can't really tell if he's waiting or just deluding himself. And he doesn't know how to ask the questions, because he's never had to before, and because he's proud, and because he's scared out of his mind that he won't like the answer.

This analysis made me swoon a little. Just saying. (PS: You should totally write meta. Also, now I want to write a fic in which Kirk has issues after being turned down by Spock because he's never NOT gotten something he's really wanted before, and he's powerless to do anything about it, and it screws with his confidence).

PLEASE write that fic and post me a link! I would LOVE to read that!!

I... may have tried, very unsuccessfully, to write meta in the past. I can't compete with the awesomeness of the meta-writing greats, though. They blow my mind on a regular basis. But I kind of like to think of my writing as "meta-by-fic"! XD

I'll have you know that thanks to this comment thread, I am neck deep in a brand spankin' new fic which may or may not be consuming my attention in lieu of actual work. It's growing like a tumor. I hope you're happy.

In other news, I think meta-by-fic is the perfect descriptor for meticulously canon-adherent works. *nods sagely*

Plot bunnies FTW!!! XD

Why, yes; yes, I am happy. I am extremely happy to hear this! Particularly the part where I was delighted to note that I'm not the only writer on LJ whose entire life has been eaten by Trek-fic... Am very much looking forward to reading this!
