Calling All Buffy Feminists

Guys! Guys! I am SO EXCITED for that Independent Study course where I get to do Whedon studies! Much thanks to ceciliaj, nvrbnkisst and ruuger who have been inundating me with interesting links that have me geeking out. I'm finally studying what I want to be studying, and it feels good to be doing so in a "future's so bright I hafta wear shades" kind of way.

So, the topic of my first paper. Essentially what it comes down to is you guys: the small cadre of Buffy-loving feminists who have examined the text thoroughly and can appreciate Joss Whedon for his accomplishments in feminist television while holding him accountable for his missteps. You are the subjects of this paper. I want to study us, and examine any other examples of feminist discourse within the Buffy fandom, so I'll be seeking help on Whedonesque and the boards, looking for people who want to talk about Buffy and feminism. I'll also look at misogyny in the fandom, because we've all seen it.

I'm working out my thesis ideas today, and I had a couple questions for those of you out there who identify as feminists. If certain people whose opinions I want don't respond, I'll track them down and stalk them until I get them talking. This is going to be a regular thing, my asking questions of my f-list to get research information, so get used to it. It's why I stole that TV icon from Lauren, so that I have something to designate posts about this paper of mine.

Anyway, the questions: Does the Buffy fandom give you an outlet to engage in feminist discourse? Would you engage in feminist discourse without the Buffy fandom? How do you engage in feminist discourse outside of the fandom? Please give me as thorough a description of your feminist activities, fannish or not, so that I get an idea of where everyone is feminism-wise.

Thank you in advance for helping me with this; I'm excited to get the conversation going!
