To Read or Not to Read . . .

I have a conundrum. On December 14th, I’ll join in the solidarity of nerddom and plunk down my $9.00 to see the opening installment of The Hobbit. There’s no question about this-I’ll be there opening day (or if I’m being honest, maybe the day after, cause I’m really just not sure I can deal with the midnight opening hordes anymore, or that my body ( Read more... )

I just finished THE HOBBIT because a) the movie will be coming out, and b) I haven't read it in over a decade (I think before the last movies came out) and I wanted to refresh my memory. Hoo-boy, have they got their work cut out for them! THE HOBBIT is basically a children's book and LotR is definitely NOT. Trying to get these movies (more on that in a bit) to jive with what has already been done is going to take a lot of work, re-writing-wise, I think. The Hobbit is much sillier than LoTR. Though I have to say that if they serious it up a little, I won't mind too much. I was actually really annoyed in the LoTR movies with the way that Gimli became this walking punchline, so I'm a little worried that the dwarves here will be nothing more than a sight-gag.

I agree that stretching it into three movies has made me leery. I could kind of understand two, but three makes me raise my eyebrows. I'm hoping that it will be awesome, but I have this bad idea it was just to squeeze an additional $9 out of me.

Have fun in the Old Forest! (I have to say that Fellowship is my favorite of the novels by a good margin.)
