To be a thief for hire in these years…
My name is Allen. I’m fifteen years old, orphan of both parents for ten years already.
Must be hard… With half the world behind your back.
For these ten years, I’ve been living with Ian, my best friend, a born orphan, and Dianehel, the damsel who gives us food and bed.
And the other half are your employers. You aren’t able to know when will they betray you.
Dianehel is a really nice woman. She always helps us look for a job and let’s us stay at the little storehouse on the back of her house.
It’s an eternal run for survival.
Of course, it’s dangerous to live in her house. Her son and husband are policemen, and…
But there are also other problems, like…
Ian and me, we’re…
Feelings…
Thieves for hire.
…
This story sets place in one of our ‘adventures’.
It was dark and cold that night.
Let the tale begin.

“Allen, Ian. You have a new assignment.”
“And me, who wanted a free day… What’s it today?”
“The Silver Rose of the Crystal Lake.”
“Pretty name, sound valious… What’s it?”
“A pure silver rose. It’s said it has been in the Lake of Platinum ever since the sacred Princess, daughter of God, cried until death because of her deceased lover. Later, the lake would be called the Crystal Lake because of her. Now, it’s a wanted jewel because such pure silver is hard to find so far north.”
“…Why don’t you work as a tale-teller?”
“I do that in my spare time. Now, your deadline is two weeks from now. I hope you’ll be able to fulfil this request without trouble.”
Dianehel is a nice woman, but sometimes I fear her authority. She’s a controller, a born leader. She’s able to calm Ian and his chocolate cravings, and THAT is an impossible task.
“Usual plan, eh, ‘Len?”
Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you: I’m mute. Really useful, because I will never spill anything out, but it can get kind of annoying once in a while.
Yeah… I guess so.
“Ok then! Now, will you, please, for this really handsome man named Ian, wear male looking clothes for this stealth?”
I don’t feel like it.
The younger thief played with his skirt, his usual way of saying ‘I don’t care about people who’re annoyed at my cross-dressing habits’.
“Can’t you be nicer? I’m supposed to be your friend.
Keyword. Supposed.
Allen tied his hair into his usual high ponytail.
“Sometimes I feel like hating you…”
Same here, mate. Same here.

“Felix.” The old man spoke in an ice-cold voice, commonly used for lower classmen or when really annoyed at something.
“Yes, father?” The named teenager bowed respectfully at his commander in chief, his long chest-nut brown hair blowing behind him.
“As you might now, I’ve been pursuing the Black Shadow for ages…”
He grabbed a case file from his desk, opening it and spilling its contents all over the wood.
“Even if the original team broke up, their sons and daughters keep their lineage, both in appareance and ways of living.”
“As the Shadow Blade, right?” Felix grabbed a mini file, sorting though it. The Blade was his addiction, just like the Shadow was his father’s. Neither could drop their investigations, even back at home. “But what does all of this have to do with moi?”
“After twenty years in this case… Twenty years of countless nights of pondering, planning… With help from you, Eevaleen, Arrakis…” The man closed his eyes and laid his elbows on the desk, his hands holding the photo of the whole SID (Shadow Investigation Divition) and staring at it longingly. “I’m dropping it.”
Silence followed the cruel statement, the boy’s heart beating fast.
What? This can’t be! This just can’t happen! He just found a lead that would solve the whole case, and he’s dropping it? I won’t believe this!
“But I’m not giving up my dream. The Shadow will be caught, no matter what. I know you’re only seventeen, but you’re already head officer of your department. I’m putting much trust on you, my son. And… I’m handing you the Latus squad.”
“But, Father! I can’t just take over your case! It’s twenty years of hard workd, of YOUR hard work! I can’t do it!”
“This is the ways things are supposed to be. Dragoni will be your second in command when he gets back. He has already been filled in the situation. I hope NeoLatus will break the Shadow Blade, just like I intended to do with the Black. You’re dismissed.”
The brunette rearranged the file sheets in complete silence. He then stormed off, mad with himself, his new case file squeezed tight in his hands.
I can’t believe this! I have to take over my father’s case, and I have no voice in his decision! What will I tell Eevaleen… Arrakis will understand, but Eeva…
“Oi!” The singing voice took Feliz out of his musings.
“Eeva… I…”
“I heard about it! In fact, the whole station does. Congrats on taking NeoLatus under your roof, mate! Catch them for me, OK?” The girl ran outside, waving, smiling, her eyes shining with restrainted tears.
“Eevaleen… I’m so sorry…”
-·-·-·-·-·-·-
Night came way too quickly to my own liking. I hadn’t seen nor Ian nor Dianehel in the whole day. By now, the police would probably have a few officers protecting our dear target. So much for secrecy…
I was dressed in my usual ‘work’ outfit. A black mini-skirt with a white cloth as a belt, and a black shirt. So girlish… But it gives easy movement and easy weaponry management. Easy steal. Three chain scythes, my custom weapon, where tied to my arms. Even easier.
“Let’s go.” Ian spoke, appearing before the cross-dresser. “First night, first attempt. Success percentage: 86.7%”
For real? Then, let’s go. I bet three and five you get injured.
“Thirty five? Make it seventy for a fair success.”
That won’t do… That’s a sure win.
“That’s the idea.”
-·-·-·-·-·-·-
“They’re trying to get the Silver Rose today, Felix. Any ideas?”
“Just for protection, set the traps and get a few guards around the main entrances and the target.”
“Ok… Don’t overdo yourself, we don’t need an over exhausted boss. And don’t get too annoying, don’t drink too much coffee, do-“
“Arrakis… Are you my mother or something? Now go and do what I told you!”
“Yes sir… Did you have bitter chocolate or something?”
The younger boy sighed and walked out of his boss’ grumpiness aura. He could feel the Shadow Blade near, but decided to not scare his friend. He could be really confusing when scared.
“A-rra-kis.”
And that made it. That low voice, the teasing tone, the way his name was pronounced… It could only mean one person.
“Ian. What’re you doing here?”
Sure thing, said boy fell down from a three, crouching and then standing, making a perfect landing. He sat down and motioned the officer to sit besides him. Arrakis complied.
“Making a pre-mission scan. You?”
“Following the grumpy boss orders…”
“Did he have bitter chocolate again?”
“I have the feeling he did.”
The albino sorted through the sheets in his clipboard, not really caring as his friend wrapped his arms around him and laid his head on his shoulder.
“Don’t work too much, you’ll get overstressed.”
“I could give you away at any minute, you know?”
“For really? You wouldn’t really!”
“I would!”
And so, the two friends were left there bickering about completely stupid matters, as their teammates prepared themselves for the ultimate thief v/s police showdown.
