The Oscars: How it All Went Down in my Imagination

Feb 28, 2016 14:40

Courtesy of my time machine, an AU version of tonight's Oscars. FYI, if you're a passionate fan of Leo, you might want to skip this. :D

In a stunning upset, frontrunner Leonardo DiCaprio did not walk away with the coveted Oscar at tonight’s Academy Award ceremony. As the names were read, DiCaprio was seen rising to his feet as The Martian’s Matt Damon was announced as the winner. An audible gasp went up, one that saw DiCaprio standing with a “what just happened?” look on his face while Damon sat next to his wife, mouth opened. Leo sank back into his chair, managing what passed for a smile, while Damon was hugged by his overjoyed wife. Standing, he turned to give the audience a WTF look, then walked toward the podium as his fellow actors began to applaud. By the time he’d made it to the stage and had the Oscar in hand, he had a grin on his face that couldn’t get any wider as the crowd came to their feet, still applauding.

“Leo, I’m sorry,” he said when people finally settled back into their chairs. “What the hell happened?” DiCaprio managed a tortured grin.

Damon, always a class act, then went on to praise DiCaprio’s performance in The Revenant along with the performances of all the other nominees before he segued into a short reflection on Ridley Scott’s power as a director and the wide-reaching impact of both The Martian’s book and movie.

One of the highest-grossing films of 2015, The Martian went on to win the Best Picture category as the ceremony’s final Oscar was handed out to director Ridley Scott.

Immediately after the telecast, DiCaprio disappeared. In the press room, Damon was asked repeatedly if he knew what had happened to his The Departed co-star, but could only shrug, Oscar in hand. “Maybe he needed to be with the bear?” he ventured at one point, looking serious, although there was a twinkle in his eyes. “Those two were pretty close.”
