A New ‘Star Trek’ TV Series Will Debut in 2017 - The New York Times

I have mixed feelings about this ...

As long as I can remember, I've been a Star Trek fan. Star Wars? Not so much. Yes, I saw the original films and enjoyed them, but that was pretty much it. Never saw the rest of the series on the big screen, but watched them on TV, which is probably where I'll watch this new reboot. Star Trek? I saw all five TV shows many, many times. I'm still watching some of them. TOS I see only sporadically, but that's because I know each episode so thoroughly there's no surprises left. Oh, and because William Shatner is a huge HAM! TNG, Voyager, and Enterprise have gotten numerous watches over the years. In fact, I was watching some TNG episodes last week. DS9? I watched it when it aired, but it's at the bottom of my list. I've watched all the films too, old and more recent. So I am one committed Trekker!

Anyway, so I have Star Trek cred and when I saw the excitement on Twitter this morning, I was thrilled ... until I read what the catch will be. I've looked at the subscription service and felt like it had a lot to offer, especially since it's not just current CBS shows, but classics like Cheers. So I'd probably be willing to subscribe to see Star Trek. All my TV viewing comes to me through my TV, since the flat screen also houses my Roku service and my desktop PC. So it isn't a big stretch and, yes, it's Star Trek!

On the other hand, I'm a little offended that CBS is doing this, which isn't good, since I've always been a huge fan of the "old people's" network, lol! They're leveraging all the Star Trek love as a huge boost to their new service. Can't blame them for that, since everyone sees TV viewing (on an actual TV) going down and online streaming as the wave of the future. On the other hand, it's going to offend the Trek fandom and, folks, let me tell you, the Trek fandom is still HUGE! Already, people are complaining that CBS is holding their beloved series hostage. Some people have already said they'd just wait for the inevitable DVD to come out.

I'm also a bit concerned that the guy running this reboot is from the more recent film franchise. Alex Kurtzman wrote and produced both Star Trek movies and he's also got lots of experience with TV series. I liked the original movie they did and thought it struck a balance between older Trek fans like me and people like my grandkids. The second film? Not so much. It seemed more hardcore action-adventure thriller with way too many explosions and, yes, it used some themes from one of my favorite Trek films--the old school ones, I mean. I also wondered why someone like Brannon Braga wasn't involved, although he's been very gracious about wishing everyone who is involved success.

Anyway, there are the conflicts. Knowing me, I'll probably go ahead and subscribe to the service, especially if the buzz around the new series is good. After all, I watch Star Trek: Enterprise even after a lot of Trek fans bailed on it. Scott Bakula was in it! :)
