The One That Got Away
It’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these, but hopefully I’ll get on a weekly schedule from now on. Anyway, today’s exploration will be into Supernatural’s The Kid’s Are Alright and Psych’s Murder Anyone…
This weeks tie in is not that they are both the second episode of season three, that in all honesty was an accident I didn’t realize until I started writing this thing. Go figure. The tie in is actually all about what could have been. Sooo stayed tuned for that. Now on to the shows.
Supernatural: The Kid’s Are Alright (3x02)
Its Dean’s dying wish-one of many he’s made Sam suffer through-to return to Cicero, Indiana a place he visited less than nine years ago. He heads to see Lisa, a yoga teacher that he spent a weekend with. He meets her son a boy named Ben, who is consequently turning eight. With the familiar characteristic and convenience of his age, Dean begins to wonder if maybe there is a third Winchester in the world.
Meanwhile the boys stumble across a case with freaky monster babies masquerading as children from the town. The Changelings, as they are called steal the children, take over their lives, feed off the mothers and kill anyone who gets in the way. Things get more complicated when Ben ends up becoming one of the stolen! The boys save the day by killing the Mama changeling, and rescuing the children, and return Ben home. Dean finds out that Ben isn’t his…or is he? Sam’s mysterious blonde stalker drops by to give some throw away hints into their mother’s past and Sam discovers what this woman really is…a demon who wants to help?
Sam’s Shinning Moment: Sam doesn’t have much a part to play in this episode, sadly, but his moment would have to be when he finds out mystery woman is a demon. He instantly goes for the holy water. Sam may be the more reasonable Winchester brother, but he ain’t stupid.
Dean’s Shinning Moment: Dean had a lot more moments to choose from, but the one that absolutely gets me grinning is him talking to Ben in the park. His methods of bully control may not be mother approved, but they earned him a big hug from his almost-son.
Foreshadowing: goose bump inspiring allusions fill the end of this episode. All of Mary Winchester’s friends were killed off by the yellow eyed demon, but why? You’ll find no answers in this section because I honestly still don’t know! Come on season 4 could you get here a little faster?
Notable Mentions: Ruby has a soft spot for tall guys and diner fries. Apparently Sam and John actually did some hunts on their own, I can only imagine how well that went. Those changeling kids were down right freaky! Some of the scariest monsters they’ve had since Bloody Mary. What was with them saying Mommy every third word? Annoying! Though I imagine if I ever hear a kid say “Mommy” I’m gonna be reaching for the holy water.
Beef: Not enough Sam. -sighs- What? I can’t help my biased. But more seriously what was with the changeling kids asking for food? They fed off the mother and as far as I could see they never ate any real food. So why did they ask for food all the time? Just seems weird.
Re-Watch-Ability: Very high…even with the lack of Sam.

Murder?...Anyone?…Anyone?...Bueller? (3x02)
Shawn and Gus return to their old trumping grounds for their thirteen year high school reunion. Gus has been working his tail off to make the night perfect, but Shawn’s attention is in a very different direction when his high school crush Abigail shows up. Trouble strikes when Shawn witnesses a murder. Only problem there’s no body.
No body no crime.
Luckily Juliet swings by to help, and unluckily for poor Carlton he was already there so team psych-reluctantly-sets out to find a killer. Who would have thought the old prom king and queen were capable of murder?
Shawn’s Shinning Moment: Sooo many moments to chose from in this episode, but one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Shawn’s speech. Though I greatly expected a joke to come out of those normally comic lips, Shawn was surprisingly genuine and open in a way we’ve only just began to see. His kind words about Gus’s friendship, and the reaction from his parents made this a truly a touching scene.
Last Laugh: This episode was hilarious-from poking the mascot, to Shawn’s continuously misunderstood movie references-but the scene that drew the most laughs from this viewer was easily Shawn dancing around like a fool on the rooftop. I love how the scene slips instantly from barrels of laughter to serious conversation, but we’ll get into that later.
Awwww Moments: There were a ton of these too! Henry and Shawn in the car was just a beautiful scene. Henry’s advice is really sweet and understanding. “Life is made up of moments…you’re having one right now.” Also, the scene with Henry and Madeline in the attic was adorable, we don’t often get to see Henry getting all sentimental. Another aww inspiring thing we don’t often see is Henry tongue tied, which it seems Madeline is capable of making him.
Notable Mentions: Lassiter and his B-witchiest banana, because apparently mug shots make for an awesome date. -laughs- Lassiter covers for Shawn and Juliet, but Chef Vic is not easily fooled as she proves when she catches on. She’s a good enough Chef that she doesn’t miss a beat, but she’s a good enough person that she lets it slid. Rock on Chefy! Did anyone else notice that Gus was in every picture that he used in his slideshow? Shawn and Gus have been best friends since they were five. And Shawn has apparently seen Pretty in Pink seventy-five times, I thought that fact was definitely worth mentioning.
Re-watch-ability: Very very high, the episode just aired last week and I’ve already watched it more than once.
Rating: 9 of 10
Tie In:
The big tie in this week is “the one that got away” aka Abigail and Lisa. Shawn runs back into his old flame, while Dean actually seeks out one of his. Both guys get a glimpse of what could have been. Shawn asks his father if you can miss a moment that changes the course of your life, and Dean is obviously wondering the same thing when he meets the kid who could have been his. Shawn confides in Abby that even as a teenager he knew that she was something special and that moment with her could be his entire future, and that scared him enough not to go. Likewise Dean explains that he wishes he had more to his name than a car, that he would have been proud to call Ben his son. These episodes delve deeply into a longing in these characters that we haven’t really seen prior. Both of them are offered a second chance.
In the end Dean chooses life on the road with Sam, and Shawn looks over at Juliet-silently, maybe even subconsciously choosing her. They tasted briefly what could have been, but chose their new lives instead.
Alright everyone see you next week! Please drop a comment.
