Dear John

Dear John Lennon,

How did you manage to stay so hopeful and optimistic about human nature and the people who live in this world? How did you pen the lyrics to 'Imagine' with a straight face? Was it just all the drugs?
I'm feeling pretty down on humans right now. All I've ever wanted was for people to be free to be themselves, to love who they love, and to be kind to each other. Why is it that people seem to want to fight tooth and nail to prevent this from happening?
I realized the other day that my idealism is fading because the older I get, the more I get fed up with bigots and hateful people doing hateful things. I'm losing my patience with the intolerant, and in doing so I am becoming intolerant myself. Was everyone like me at one point? Did the same thing happen to them? Did they just eventually get so fed up with people's nastiness that they said, "Fuck it" and became nasty themselves?
Is there any choice other than joining a commune of like-minded folk and eventually drinking kool-aid?
Dear John, I'm feeling pretty cynical right now.
Dear John, how did you stay sweet?

john lennon, is humanism a load of bs?, bigots and their 'logic', depressed, strange days indeed, letters to the dead
