Seen in Green Car Congress, the Detroit Free Press is reporting that DaimlerChrysler is actually considering building a US model of the SmartCar as soon as 2007:

I saw some SmartCars in Vancouver, BC last week while I was there, so it can't be all that hard to make them work in North America.

Perky "Canada" Has Own Government, Laws (from The Onion, but their online archives don't go back that far.)

There have been some canadian-registered ones seen in Davis Square, too. That's a matter of treaty, not similarity in regulation. (Also, I'm pretty sure Zap is specifically doing California conversion, which is even stricter...)

Can you get a roll-down ramp for your Hummer so that you can stop places
and drive out with the Smart car? Or does it not quite fit? ;-)
I guess there's not enough vertical clearance in the back,
but it could be quite amusing-looking if you could pull it off.

Mine is a wagon, though, not a pickup, so I'd have to use a normal trailer, which would *still* be kind of disturbing...
