Early TLO Box Office Post

Apr 20, 2012 18:38

These are the earliest numbers so it's kind of a reach to say with certainty where things will go, but...

THR says:
Warner Bros.' Lucky One should gross $6 million to $7.5 million for the day, also a good start and ahead of the $4 million Hunger Games is projected to earn. At those levels, Lucky One should open between $16 million and $18 million.

box office, the lucky one

I mean...

Okay, so I love you Cady (and in NO way is my comment a means to denote your musings, because I know you do early BO posts for all his films) and of course I'm always feeling the f*ck out of Zac, but are the #'s really that serious? I'm aware they matter. I understand that to a degree the BO does matter- to studios, crews and the cast as individuals.

That being said, I'm not about to sit on pins and needles waiting for numbers to dictate or somehow "prove" Zac or this film's worth. I'm excited, I hope others (especially fellow fans) are stoked- and I am beyond pumped to watch the HELL out of the flick this weekend... regardless what # it debuts at.

Well said, Audrey. I know deep down on some level I probably should care about the numbers because I want it to do well, but I just don't very much. Just like I don't give a flying flip what the critics say either. Bottom line for me is, if they movie looks good I'll see it, whether it's a Zac film or not.

And I've been wanting to see how it turned out ever since filming wrapped and ever since I heard how good it was from some friends who saw it at a test screening. I'm just disappointed I have to wait until tomorrow lol.

"Just like I don't give a flying flip what the critics say either."

I have to agree there. Sure I want it to do well at the BO and I want critics to like it, but at the end of the day if I want to see a movie I don't give a crap if some old critic likes it or anything like that. And that goes for non-Zac movies also.

Like I said before, I'm alright with it coming in 2nd. That really isn't bad, therefore I'm still happy. We'll see what the weekend brings I guess...

what the critical and the box office results are do actually impact whether zac gets to do more movies and the quality of those movies. so it is kind of important in terms of fandom and on zac's behalf since zac wants to do good movies so he needs to be well-reviewed and/or good at the box office. but ultimately this was his choice, he'll live with the consequences.

I just can't pretend to care (much) about the box office or bite my nails in anticipation of debut #'s. It's not like I have/had any genuine say in the matter. I didn't make this film, I didn't act in it- all I can do is support it... which I'm going to do later this evening and probably a 2nd go-round later this weekend.

Obviously I hope it fares well for all involved.

Go Aaudrey! We are looking forward to your comparison of the first screening, and how it looks now. :)

I love you too, so please don't take my comment the wrong way either but...

Box office is ALL the studio cares about. Especially if it's not a prestige project and the reviews for this movie AND Zac are awful - worse than CStC. This movie brought Zac the worst reviews of his career and I can guarantee you the way they are, he lost quite some credibility in the industry with it already.

If this movie doesn't do halfway OK at the box office, it will be strike 3 for Zac in a row (even though unfair, the industry will include NYE in his list of failures; and Lorax doesn't count because it was only voice work) and will without doubt do some serious damage to his career.

If you want a recent example... Taylor Lautner's Abduction tanked at the box office and now he has NOTHING coming up. Oops I forgot, he just got a small part in Adam Sandler's next movie. What a career now. And that was 1 movie he fucked up and he's getting left in the cold from all studios.

As star you can make bad movies/give bad performances IF it makes money (eg Adam Sandler, Channing Tatum) OR you can be really good and have meh box office (eg Tom Hardy) but you CANNOT have bad box office for bad movies. You can do that once but not 3 times in a row like Zac would do if TLO tanks at the box office. As they say, "you're only as good/valuable as your last movie." It's sad but nobody gives a damn if you're nice or work hard... Zac either has to bring money or be really good, or he will not keep getting the movies he wants.

I have no doubt it won't slow you down.

It would however slow Zac down.

It would however slow Zac down.

Maybe it will, maybe it won't.

(Probably NOT the best choice in gif, seeing as we're talking about box office! LOL)

I'm off to take in a showing of the film we're sitting here discussing.

I totally agree. I don't care how harsh critics are towards this movie, but I care deeply how well it will perform at the box office.

By the way, is New Year's Eve considered a failure? It did very well overseas...

Was wondering the samething.

Also if TLO gets second place would it be considered a failure also? The articles you links said its over performing right now. Thats a good thing.

Sorry don't know much about this whole BO thing.

I think debuting at the second place is totally fine as long as it earns respectable money. Think Like a Man is just doing too well...

Unfairly but yes. Technically it wasn't a bomb as you pointed out but every media reporting I've seen on it this year calls it a failure.

I think normally he would get a pass for it (esp since he was one of the better things in this movie) but it's likely the combo with the others which would tip the scale. Of course, this is assuming that TLO fails.

I don't think the comparison to Taylor is accurate for a number of reasons.

I'd be much more worried if he didn't have anything else under his belt, but he has two potentially very good films already completed, and I'm hoping that can help make up for this.
