and dammit! I missed it

Ok. It's a little gory but I've got a dark sense of humor that appreciates the macabre...

Something died violently on my deck today. At least, that's what I think given the broken branches and the crusty red snow in the tomato planter. And the lack of critters this afternoon.

I'm a little bummed that I missed the excitement.

I once watched a small hawk devour a starling in our backyard. It was fascinating, although I'm somewhat glad I didn't see the actual catch, only the meal.

At our old house I narrowly missed watching a squirrel get caught. As it was the bird was still securing his prey when I went to get my glasses because I wasn't sure what I was looking at. I find it all pretty fascinating.

I saw a cat catch a bird once--picked it right out of the air. A sparrow, if I remember correctly. She promptly brought it over and dropped it by my chair (we were visiting). While I was flattered, I was feeling too much compassion for the bird to fully appreciate the gift. She was an amazing hunter, though, I'll give her that.

I knew an avid birder once who drove home how much damage outdoor cats do to bird populations. Made it hard to appreciate cats after that. I keep wishing the towns would adopt leash laws for them, too.
