WARNINGS → (Pre-Kira) Light being all gay and cute, L being all...apathetic.
Light had mixed feelings about this certain event with L. He was happy that he could spend time with the detective and keep him un-bored, but he was also nervous about being near him. He figured that he wasn't on-and-off sick with fevers whenever he thought about or was in contact with L; that was illogical and didn't make any sense.
Then again, having any sort of "crush" on someone was illogical and didn't make any sense.
But Light was brave, and would face his...feelings without fear.
So he took a deep breath, stood up from his sitting spot on his bed, and went to open the door. He hoped his feeling-things weren't so much different in person.
L stood in the doorway, impatiently biting at his thumb. When Light appeared in the doorway L's eyes traveled up towards him, examining him for the briefest moment. He took his hand away from his mouth and grabbed Light's wrist. "Come on. We have to get the movie."
Turning back towards the hallway, L dragged Light towards the elevator without further explanation. It was unnecessary. Light knew the mission.
Oh god. He grabbed his wrist. That was unexpected.
Trying to fight his blush as he was dragged, Light struggled to find his voice. "Ah, I needed to lock the door..." he said. He was used to being "dragged around" by L, but not literally dragged!
He false-coughed into his hand--as an actor, it sounded real--to hopefully cover up for his blush. L was smart...he might notice.
What an interesting tone Light had just had in his voice. It was barely there, but L took note of the oddity. Hm. Perhaps Light had a cold or something of the sort, it would explain the reddish tone of his skin as well as his cough.
He stopped and turned on the balls of his feet towards Light, releasing his wrist. "Ah, yes, go ahead." he shoved his hands back into his pockets where they belonged and stared at Light as he waited, as if staring would will him to work faster.
If anything, the staring was making Light go slower.
But he nodded upon finally realizing he was released, and ran back to close and lock his door. He took a deep breath again, leaning his forehead against the door. This was definitely going to be interesting...
He returned to L timely enough, one hand in his pocket. "Alright, I'm ready."
If L had eyebrows, he would've raised them. Light putting his forehead against the door seemed strange too. He just added it to his mental inventory of strange things Light was doing that day.
"Good, lets go." he demanded, not taking Light's arm again. It seemed to bother him for some reason. He did, however, lead the way to the movie rental store on campus.
Walking to the store, L began to regret not having gotten the movie ahead of time. Being out like this forced him into shoes. He made a disgusted face at them as they flopped against the back of his heel.
Light mentally pouted, un-pouted, and threw himself for a loop. He wanted L to grab his wrist, but that was stupid, but he really wanted him to, but that was stupid. I don't like this... he thought in disdain.
He followed, trying to stay by L's side. He glanced down at his feet and noted he was wearing shoes. Oh yeah...L didn't like shoes. "Have you ever considered wearing slippers outside instead of shoes?" he asked.
L's eyes snapped from his stupid shoes to Light in a second. "Slippers wouldn't be as effective in keeping my feet safe from whatever it is shoes are meant to protect feet from." he sighed, "They're typically softer, and their soles are much thinner."
They arrived at the store and he walked inside, taking his hand from his pocket and pressing his thumb against his lips. Detective movies would be most likely found in the 'Drama' section.
Okay...duh. Of course L would have thought about it!
Light sighed as they went in. Hopefully he wouldn't say anything stupid today. He tugged lightly on L's shirt, and took a step in the direction of the Drama section. "It's probably over here somewhere." he explained, wondering vaguely how he could be having a "crush" on someone so socially strange and awkward.
L felt the small tug and blinked at the offending hand. Odd things list as of now: red face, cough, forehead to door, shirt tug. His mind buzzed with possibilities of why Light was behaving so strangely. Perhaps it was something he caught from his fellow actors, or an illness of some sort. But then, what kind of illness causes shirt-tugging?
"I know." he replied off-handly, walking in the same general direction as Light. He began searching the shelves. It shouldn't be too hard to find this movie.
He hoped that wasn't another hint at his crush on L. If he was going to figure it out, Light would much prefer it be elsewhere.
Scanning the shelves he probably looked over the movie more than a couple of times, his mind wandering to various situation outcomes regarding the living oddity he was with. It made him redder, and he forced a cough yet again to cover it up.
The side that L was on didn't appear to have the movie he wanted. More coughing from Light. Maybe the movie was over there. He turned around and scanned the letters, and realized that Light was right in the way.
He shoved Light out of the way slightly, and immediately found the movie he was looking for. He grabbed the movie and, this time, grabbed Light again to take them both to the register. There was a 46% chance that his action had caused Light to stumble in some way that would make it harder to follow immediately.
Light was surprised as L materialized over, pushed him and immediately discovered the movie. How did he not see that? Oh, right. He was thinking.
He doubted that he would have cared about being pushed in the first place anyway, so nothing odd came out of him from that. Other than that he didn't realize it until after it happened, that is.
And he was yet again being dragged. He stumbled, caught off guard. His senses seemed to be muddled, his reaction time dulled. It crossed his mind that this probably looked quite strange: a socially awkward man dragging around a seemingly pretentious younger man. Light sighed when they got to the register. "Do you have money?" he asked, glancing at L from the corner of his eye.
Placing the movie on the counter, L looked back at Light, "Naturally. It would be rude to make you pay for my idea." he explained. He released Light's hand to take his wallet from his back pocket. It was held carefully between his thumb and forefinger as he fished the money out of it to give to the cashier.
He payed no mind to the strange looks he received from the cashier. This wasn't the first person who gave L odd looks.
After an obligatory "Thank you for shopping at _____, we hope to see you soon!" L led the way out of the shop, tugging Light along with him.
L had really weird habits. But the way he held his wallet made Light smile--even if the smile was faint and suppressed. He viewed L as being superior over just about everything, and normal habits fell under that category. Maybe the reason why he was so aloof was because he was just on that higher of a level.
Light wasn't sure if he would have been okay with the dragging if it were someone else, somewhere else. Would he care what his high school friends thought? Would he care about what strangers on the street thought? Would he care if it weren't L taking his arm and pulling him around like his toy?
He wasn't sure, and he didn't think he wanted to know; he was quite content with the situation he had right here.
He kept silent; if L wanted to talk then he would talk with him. If L didn't want to talk then he wouldn't.
L's thoughts went back to the theory of why Light was acting so strangely. It had to be something that he started doing when he started the play. That, or he was practicing for some scene. That was doubtful though, L knew Sweeney Todd did not have these symptoms at any time during the performance.
They arrived back at the dorm shortly after, it wasn't a long distance to walk. L kicked off his shoes outside the door and bent to pick them up. "Go ahead, unlock the door." he gestured towards the door.
Light concluded that there was a possibility that people viewed L as a jerk. Most would probably be insulted by his words and gestures, but Light was only more intrigued. What on earth could make it so that doing such things were so easy for L?
He nodded and unlocked the door, walking in. "I don't think we have a lot of sugary things to eat..." he warned, finally looking L in the eye. "Just a heads up."
L's lips curled into an awkward smile as he put his shoes on the ground inside the dorm, "Oh, don't worry, I came prepared." And with that, he pulled four lollipops from his pocket.
As he walked inside he inspected the lollipops. Approximately two hour movie, perhaps he wouldn't need all of these. With that thought in mind, he held a lollipop towards Light. "Here, do you want it? I can share." Nice gestures from L were few and far in between, but Light was special. Light was his friend, at least, and maybe he'd be bothered by a lack of lollipop.
Light blinked. He wasn't surprised at L's prepared-ness, but he was surprised at the offering of a lollipop. He took it with a slightly stuttered 'thanks' and face warming.
Snapping back from happy-L-lollipop-land, he beckoned L to follow him. "Over here." And thus led the detective to the living room-esque area with the TV and couch.
Something about Light stuttering made L a little happy on the inside. It was another abnormality, but it was a pleasant reaction. Light was usually a very composed sort of person. Maybe it was seeing him out of his element in a small way that made L smile.
He followed Light to the living area, holding the bag with the movie in his hand. As he moved to sit in standard-L-fetal position, he opened the case with the movie in it. When he saw what was inside, he stopped in mid-sit. Picture This..? "Hm. Light, I don't think we got the movie we wanted."
Light turned the lollipop between his fingers, pondering. Sitting next to L for about two hours straight...how would he fare...? Would he be nervous, comfortable or ridiculously and girlishly happy? He had tossed and turned over the fact that yes he did have a crush on another male and yes this man was L. He wasn't feeling any of the feelings characters from Sayu's daytime soaps or books felt; or at least none of the dramatically portrayed feelings.
He sighed and as he was about to sit down, L made the discover of the movie issue.
"Oh. I guess the employees aren't very good with putting the right DVD into the right case." he commented. He felt curious about this movie, despite how obnoxious it looked.
L was looking at the movie with a very confused sort of look on his face. It was the oddest movie he had ever laid eyes on. "Picture This"? Some blonde girl was on the cover with an awkward-wanna-be smirk on her face. Most definitely not a detective movie. "It would appear so." he replied in an almost interested sort of tone.
"Well, this is the only movie we have. I suppose we should watch it, it'd be a waste of money not to. We can inform them of their mistake afterwards." he reasoned, honestly fairly curious about this strange movie. It might as well have been a foreign object.
Equally curious, Light took the movie from L and went to go put it in. "Should be interesting..." he muttered, squatting down to mess with the DVD player. Once he put the disc in, he grabbed the remote and got up, walking backward to the couch.
He plopped down on the cushions and worked with the remote until the movie came on, which, honestly, nearly terrified him. "Definitely a girl-ish movie..."
L's eyes suddenly widened at the TV. This was most definitely a girlish movie. He almost regretted the decision to watch this, but some part of him was amused. Pressing his thumb to his lips, he tilted his head at the narrator's definition of the situation, and "Excalibur".
"I don't understand this movie. How could anyone care that much about a phone?" L despised phones. They were mostly unnecessary and beyond obnoxious. Granted, he did have one, but there was no way he would ever obsess over one the way this blonde girl was.
Light couldn't help but smile. He remembered that L didn't like phones, so this was probably an alien concept to him, high school teenagers going crazy over the newest phone model.
"These are your typical, brainless high school students." he explained, toeing his shoes and socks off. His feet hurt suddenly for some reason...the pain would be gone soon, he suspected, but for now he would comply with their cries for freedom.
He glanced at L, but mostly L's thumb on his lips. What if...what if...what if he...
Light feigned another cough as he felt himself get warm again. No. He would not think of that. It was too embarrassing.
"Ah, I don't have much experience with brainless high school students." he said curiously. Honestly, he didn't have any experience with high school students. He'd been home schooled, sort of, for longer than he could imagine.
His eyes found their way to Light again once he coughed, finally asking, "Is there something wrong, Light?" He stared straight at Light, curious. Maybe he could get some answers out of him rather than trying to infer it himself, though he did have some theories.
Good. They're annoying. Light thought, carrying on with his fake cough. Once he believed it was enough, he sighed and looked at L, flushed.
"Just a cough, that's all..." he replied, staring back at L with his larger-than-most brown eyes. There was a sort of longing in them, like he really wanted something but was unable to get it and/or just plain unconfident in himself about getting it.
He tried to tear his eyes from L, but found he really couldn't; L's face intrigued him somehow, and it was hard to avert his attention from this superior man.
L blinked at Light. He hadn't ever really noticed how big Light's eyes were before that instance. Something about the look that they held made them stand out more than usual. His intuition told him that there was something that he wanted from him, but he couldn't fathom what it was. Maybe he wanted another lollypop, but no, he still had the one he'd gotten before. Hm. How strange. "You should do something about that." he said, his voice making it clear he didn't quite believe that it was just a cough.
Looking away, L found himself watching the movie again. How strange. That boy appeared to be in a relationship, but the main character was trying to date him. There was something that felt very wrong about that. He took this time to unwrap a lollypop, and place it into his mouth. Sweets might help him figure out why Light was being strange.
He was being seen right through, wasn't he? Light held back a sigh. He knew L would figure out it wasn't a cough, but so long as he didn't figure out what it really was...
He unwrapped his lollipop as well, breaking his gaze in L's direction to watch the movie. Tapping the candy against his lips, he thought about the characters' situations. She was trying to get him to like her...and he was definitely flirting with her while he was dating another girl. How pitiful. he thought before putting the lollipop in his mouth.
Light crossed his legs, and his posture was now more contrasting to L's than before. "I'm...taking medicine." he murmured belatedly in response to L's comment.
Of course L saw right through Light. He may have been a good actor, but his huge eyes didn't lie. The curiosity was eating at him, though, but he couldn't show Light that. L wasn't one to show weakness of any kind.
L swirled the lollipop in his mouth, watching the strangest movie he'd ever seen. Granted, he hadn't seen many movies, but this was like a foreign language. And what was with all the phones?
Light's sudden mumbles caught L's attention. "I see, that's good. Perhaps you should take some more soon. You've already coughed at least four times in the short amount of time we've been together, and your face seems redder than usual." he turned towards Light, "Do you have a fever?"
"Y-yeah...I'll do that later." he said, feeling guilty for having to lie to L. He was a natural liar, could lie to anyone anytime, but the fact that it was L he was lying to didn't make him feel all that great. In response to L's question about him having a fever, he shook his head. "I don't believe I do...why?"
Light had conveniently forgotten he had been blushing, thus he must have looked as if he had a fever. His mind was elsewhere; he was focused on the movie, his lollipop, and thinking about L.
L stared at Light with widened eyes. "Your face. Occasionally it gets extremely red, and you usually cough around that time. I'm fairly certain they're connected, and if you have a cough maybe you have a fever as well." he leaned towards Light a little as he spoke, examining him. He placed a hand on his forehead and frowned a little. "You don't feel any hotter than usual." he took the lollypop out of his mouth, leaned in, and placed his forehead against Light's, "Hm. No, you seem to lack a fever."
He backed off slightly, moving his body to the position it was in before his minor examination. "I'm having trouble figuring it out. That bothers me." he pouted slightly as he let Light in on his secret.
Light felt as if he were going to explode. He wasn't expecting L to be so...forward! And so...seeing-through-him!
His face was getting redder and redder. Feeling L's skin against his, being so close to him, their faces just centimeters apart...it was horrifying. He wasn't used to this sort of attraction, and suddenly his crush was closing in on him. It...wasn't what he thought it would be.
It was...much better.
But still, he put his hand over his face in an attempt to cover his blushing, and averted his eyes to the TV, but not really focusing on it. He was afraid if he looked at L any longer his emotions would go haywire. "I-I'm sorry, L." he stuttered. "Maybe you'll, uh, figure it out later...I trust you to." He just wasn't sure if he wanted L to know quite yet.
"Hm. I suppose I will. I've always solved my cases, this shouldn't be any different." L sighed, confidence unexpectedly boosted, "You're all red again, you know." He put his lollypop back in his mouth and faced the TV. Somehow the main character and the main boy-thing were hugging.
Seeing this was odd, and slightly disturbing. "Isn't that character dating another girl?" he asked, just to be sure.
Happy that the fact that his face was red being reinforced was the only thing mentioned, Light visibly relaxed. He didn't respond to the comment; he had nothing to say to it.
He stared at the TV, and cursed himself when he tried to put himself and L in the boy and girl's places. That's the kind of thing Sayu does...I'm in college, and I'm far more mature than most students here. he thought, frowning.
"Hm? Oh...yeah, I think so. He probably doesn't like the other girl but likes this one, thus cheating is happening." he summarized before sticking his lollipop back into his mouth.
"High school politics are incredibly strange. I don't think I'll ever quite understand. They speak a different language and behave as though they're a part of some strange foreign country in which the customs are different." He leaned towards the screen, trying to decipher what was going on.
'..And, does a guy really need to explain why he thinks a girl is hot?'
'You think I'm hot?' "..Light, why is this important? This girl sounds very excited about the fact that she was called 'hot'." he asked while looking at the screen.
Light smiled and removed his hand from his face, although it was still tinted red. He twiddled his thumbs and sucked on his lollipop while thinking of an answer for L.
"Well...when someone uses 'hot' to describe someone's appearance, that means that the person is attractive." He looked at L out of habit from looking at people while talking to them. "Sexually attractive, usually."
And he realized just the sequence in which that happened. He looked at L and made the "sexual" comment. Oh boy...it was going to be a long night...
"So if I thought someone was sexually attractive, I would call them hot?" he asked in an apathetic tone, cocking his head to the side while looking at the screen. That felt odd. It seemed like there were much better words that could be used rather than to call someone warm in temperature.
This movie really was strange, and very predictable. L had a deep suspicion as to how it would end within the first 10 minutes of watching. How sad that a movie could even be that predictable.
"I...suppose so. But people use it to describe products that are popular, too." Light replied, remembering why he didn't like pop culture nowadays. "It's...rather unintelligent." And it sounded weird coming from L. His voice didn't match the term. At all.
Unfortunately, the move was interesting, but that didn't mean it was enjoyable. "...He doesn't have a personality."
L tilted his head at the movie, this was..odd. "Well I suppose you wouldn't call a product sexually attractive." he replied dryly. "Clearly very little thought was put into this movie."
"You're right. He doesn't have a personality at all does he? His only virtue is his appearance, and I wouldn't consider him 'hot'." His voice was apathetic, which made the word 'hot' sound especially strange considering the connotation of the word. As the movie went on, it became clear that this movie was not going anywhere. For some reason, it was considered a-okay to disobey your parents, spend all your money on a dress, drink medicine that isn't prescribed to you, and almost kill yourself just to get the guy.
"Light...I think there is something wrong with this girl."
Light had to let out a small laugh. "I think there's something wrong with her, too. She's doing far too much to be considered 'reasonable' or even remotely intelligent." Cynical? Just a bit.
He sighed. "So after all that, including nearly getting killed, her world is crashing and she wants to give up because she and the other girl have the same dress?"
Groaning, he fell back against the couch, rubbing his eye. "I hope Sayu doesn't know anyone like her..."
L scrunched up his eyes in disbelief. "...Yes? Because having the same dress as another girl is the worst thing in the---" He stopped mid-sentence, seeing the girl suddenly walking towards the boy with a slit in her dress. "Wait. That was the magical alteration? The slit in her dress?"
He made a small noise, and leaned backwards against the couch near where Light was, the pressure of the utter stupidity causing him to lose balance. "If this is anything like high school, I am thoroughly pleased I made the choice not to go." He smiled after a few seconds of thought and made a small joke, "I might have died in a car crash trying to go after a boy, you know."
Sighing, Light shook his head. "That's probably the most creative thing in this entire movie." he commented dryly, not impressed.
He jumped slightly as L fell back, and found himself flushing somewhat. "You didn't go to high school?" he asked, confused. Was that possible? Was it possible to skip high school? "I'm sure you wouldn't, you don't seem like you'd be easily brainwashed like these girls." he said with near-disgust. It was only then he realized what L said and his flush grew.
"Ah, would you really go after a boy?" he asked, turning his body to look at L.
"No, I was home schooled by my guardian." he explained. He thought he'd already told Light that, but guessed it was his imagination. L's schooling history wasn't exactly what you'd call normal. "Though, I do suppose I wouldn't be that easily brain washed."
He stopped paying attention to the movie, and turned towards Light. "Hm? Oh." He thought about it for a few more seconds, placing his index finger against his lips, eyes towards the ceiling. "I can't imagine ever going after anyone, actually. I've never been romantically involved before." The words romantically involved sounded just as awkward coming out of L's mouth as the idea of him in a relationship was.
Light's hope of a relationship with L--which did sound odd, but he wouldn't have it any other way--began to diminish. He knew that L was probably telling the truth, it wasn't a surprise to him, but he still hoped.
Just like he hoped his disappointment wasn't obvious. "Ah, really? Well, I suppose that makes sense, you don't seem like the kind of guy to be especially social." he said, smiling wryly.
L's non-eyebrows raised slightly as he noticed Light's slight change in emotional air. Something about that made him very happy. His smile was odd. "No, I'm not." he admitted, "You're my first friend, you know." It felt necessary to explain how secluded he really was so that Light could understand.
"Why did you ask? Would you go after a boy?" he asked, suddenly curious. It seemed like Light was getting far more information out of L than L was getting out of Light and that wasn't fair.
Light smiled and pulled his leg up onto the couch, hugging it. It felt good to stretch his muscles, especially since he had to put swimming on hold until the play would be performed; he didn't want to exert himself too much. "I'm honored."
He faltered at L's question and his blush reappeared. Great. "Well, I...suppose I might...I've never...put thought into it before." But perhaps I should...after all, I'm going after you, so I should know... he decided, glancing at L from the corner of his eye. He just...had to find the motivation to get over his embarrassment and do something.
"I'm not sure that you should be." L wondered aloud. He really wasn't sure what kind of honor it would be to be friends with such a strange person. L knew he was strange, he knew he was kind of a jerk, and honestly was a little unsure as to why Light would be hanging out with him in the first place. It was probably the intelligent conversation. There weren't many intelligent people at Evergrove, at least not as intelligent as they were.
L blinked, slightly surprised. He hadn't expected Light to be even remotely gay, or if he was to say anything about it. This was an interesting turn of events. "I see." he responded quietly, thinking.
Light's face was turning red again. L deduced it was out of embarrassment at the question. It was logical. Normal people would get embarrassed at the idea of a question like that. This thought triggered a series of thoughts. If Light was getting red out of embarrassment perhaps this wasn't the first time, so maybe Light was constantly getting embarrassed. That wouldn't explain the coughing, though. Maybe he was embarrassed and sick, but why would he be embarrassed so often?
That was...confusing. "Huh? Why not?" Light asked, turning his head to look at L, his large eyes reflecting his curiosity. "It's not like there are evil villains out to get you and your friends and family...right?"
He hadn't thought about the possibility that L thought he was straight. But Light just accepted that he just had to be since he never had romantic feelings for any woman. It was hard for him to even get close to them, they were a waste of time in his eyes. The movie presented a very good example as to why they weren't worth it.
"Oh, well, no I suppose not. Although it could become a problem should anyone of consequence realize I am the famous detective that I am." he replied, tilting his head towards Light. "I just don't see much benefit in being my friend." The lollipop L was sucking on was gone, so he replaced it with an extra he'd brought with him, twirling it in his mouth.
Light had some seriously large eyes. L wasn't sure if he'd realized it before. Maybe it was the way the screen was reflecting into them, because they looked like they were glowing. This caused L to blink again, finding himself distracted and surprised in a small way.
Light smiled despite whatever negative feelings he was getting from L. "Well, I don't look for benefits, but I can think of plenty." he said, tilting his head against his leg. "You're smart and I can hold an actual conversation with you that's not one-sided, we can play tennis together, and...and you're different from the normal, everyday person." There were more reasons why Light like L, but that wasn't the matter at hand.
For once, Light thanked his eyes for existing. He knew what they could do to people, and if he decided to change his emotion to alter their appearance they could affect any situation. He had never needed to get out of trouble, but he was confident that he could. Right now he wasn't trying to get anything from L, so any longing or general sweetness that caused his eyes to "glow" was completely natural.
L smiled awkwardly, a little surprised that Light had taken the opportunity to actually compliment him. It wasn't anything really new, anything L didn't know already, but it was the way he said it that made it feel special. "Different would be a good way to describe me." his smile grew, feeling pleasant.
Something about the way Light was sitting struck L as 'cute'. He wasn't quite sure what it was, and he decided not to try and analyze it. He was honestly still way too busy analyzing why Light was turning red. He decided that Light must be blushing, and that he was possibly coughing either because of that blushing, or because he was sick. He wasn't coughing every time he blushed so maybe he really was sick.
Light chuckled. "Good, but not enough." he replied without thinking, and upon realizing what he said blushed a bit more. Crap. He needed to stop slipping up. Soon he'd be spilling his heart out to L, who might reject his feelings.
"I mean, uh, there are more ways to describe you, it's hard to sum you up in one word." And his attempt at saving himself failed, in his mind. If anything, he felt that it made his one-sided situation worse.
Light was blushing again. What was embarrassing him at this moment in time?? Was L doing something that caused this embarrassment? He would have to be, but what was he doing? Nothing out of the ordinary. 'Not enough'? Light must've thought highly of L for him to say that.
"Hm, I suppose that's true." L stared at Light, trying to see through to his thoughts. It didn't quite work.
He hoped L wasn't thinking too hard about this...he knew that L would be analyzing him, and at this moment he was torn between being okay with it and not being okay with it. He wanted L to know, but he didn't. It was quite confusing.
"Yeah..." Light sighed and looked at the TV, noting that the movie seemed to be close to ending. "...She's leaving because she thinks he's going to have sex with her?" he asked aloud in disbelief. How could she be stupid? He was a nice guy, he wasn't going to do that. "Her lack of interest in his personality is really bothersome..."
Distracting himself? Oh yeah.
L let out a small sigh, leaving his analysis alone for a while as Light commented on the movie. "Hm, yes, apparently so." This girl was very stupid. "He wasn't interested in having sex with her, I'm sure of that. I suppose she only pays attention to the way people look" he tilted his head at the screen, wide eyed.
The movie progressed more quickly than expected, and suddenly, she was at a prom...? Really? A prom? What in the world? "Light, did that just happen extremely quickly, or did I miss something?" L sounded very confused, and he was. This made no sense.
Light was equally confused. How did that even progress? It was rushed, and thus didn't make much sense. "No, we saw everything...I think they were just running out of time and had to end this horrible movie fast." he replied, scrunching up his nose. This was beyond tasteless.
And then the movie ended. Quickly, without a real ending, without making any sense as to why it turned out a-okay. "What...what just happened? Was that it?" L took a step off the couch, towards the screen, trying to inspect it. His body hunched over and blocked the screen as he looked at the credits, trying to understand what was going on.
He turned back towards Light from his awkward half-standing position, face distorted with confusion and disgust. "It's over now?"
Before, he found L far from cute. Now, watching him, Light couldn't help but smile and laugh into his hand upon watching this awkward man with large raccoon eyes act childishly adorable. He got up and went over to eject the movie, smiling at L.
"Yeah, that was it. It's not a good movie, most don't end so abruptly and nonsensically." He had the urge to ruffle L's hair, but quickly voted against it. Too touchy and out of character.
L's face reverted back to a frown and he let out a small sigh. "I should hope not. That was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen." he tossed the finished lollipop into a nearby trash can and stood up all the way. He slid his hands into his pockets and looked at Light. "Perhaps next time we should check the movie before we buy. I apologize for suggesting we sit through that monstrosity."
Light shook his head. "It's fine, it ended up being entertaining in its own way. No need to apologize."
To him, it didn't matter so much what movie they watched. He just wanted to spend time with him, and that's exactly what he got. Granted, he had to pull off more spouts of fake coughs than he had in a long while and his face felt nice and well-done, but it was worth it. "We should do this again sometime."
L smiled at Light. It was just a brief moment, but L found himself feeling very comfortable with Light. "I agree. It might be..fun." he replied, a little awkwardly, but honestly.
As it turned out, he did enjoy the time he spent with Light. In spite of his confusing actions---and L would figure those out, he was determined---Light was probably the only person he could really spend leisure time with.
After a brief glance around, to make sure he hadn't left anything, L looked back at Light, staring straight into his eyes. "I suppose I'll see you around, then."
Sighing, Light set the movie case on top of the TV. "I'll take it back." he offered before leading L to the door. He didn't want him to leave, and turned over many ideas in his head on how to keep the detective just a while longer. None of them were logical, and a few were just too straight-forward. He'd have to forfeit this round.
"Yes...I'll see you around, too. Maybe when the weather warms up we can play more tennis?"
"Hm, yes, that would be nice. I need more practice." he nodded, walking towards the door. They'd get the chance to be together again soon, at least in class, that was for sure.
L walked to the door, opened it and stepped into his shoes. "Good bye." he gave Light a small awkward wave, and walked away, hands in his pockets, thoughts going back to why Light was acting so strangely.
Unbeknownst to him, he left a couple lollipops on the couch where he'd been sitting. They fell out of his pocket, and when he discovered that they were missing, he was already out of the building. He decided it would be alright because he had plenty more back at the dorm room.
Light smiled and shut the door behind L, locking it and leaning back against it. "That went well." he commented quietly with a wry chuckle. He pushed himself off the door and wandered over back to the couch, where he noticed a few stray lolipops. He blinked and picked them up, wondering if L had left them on purpose.
Well...I suppose if he notices I kept them I can always repay him... So he unwrapped one, stuck it in his mouth, and happily retreated to his room, the other lolipops in his grasp.
[[ooc: look, I color-coded it :D and yes, Light's lolipop disappeared into hammer space...]]
