"The number of chapels attended will determine the amount of the disciplinary
fine, which is $35 per credit under the required 20 (19 chapel credits = $35
fine, 18 credits = $70 fine, 17 credits = $105, and so on). This fine will be
listed in a student's college bill as a disciplinary fine. The money received
from these fines will be directed into Malone's Service-Learning Program. Our
hope is that, with the addition of the video-watching opportunity listed above,
students will not get to the point of being fined for too few chapel credits."
new policy for fall 2005
I cannot fully agree with this decision that the Campus Ministries department has made. I understand that you are trying to get chapel attendances up, but scaring people into going does not seem to be the way to go. I applaud your efforts, and I like the fact that you can now make up chapels by watching a video; however, I know that there are some students here who are at 18 credit hours, that if they accidently miss an extra chapel do not have enough time to spare to watch a tape and write a paper on top of the classes and papers that they already have to write. If they cannot do this, than they are find at least $35. I'm not sure if you are aware of it, but a lot of the students who go here can barely afford to pay for their semesters here. I know that it wouldn't be a problem if they just went to chapel, but honestly, I feel that the department has gotten very ridiculous about things. I walked into chapel feeling really bad, so after my friends convinced me to do so, I ended up going to Mercy Medical Hospital for severe chest pains. The reaction I got from the department was "Oh, I'm sorry that's too bad. Let me just go ahead and take that chapel credit off for you," as if they were doing a favor for me. I had no oppurtunity to make that chapel up, even if I had a valid excuse. So, I do appreciate the fact that we can now make up chapels, but I think that your punishment is a little severe. We are not made up of money.
