Prologue - Chronology

It was impossible not to be drawn to Jung Yunho. He had a benevelence about him, a warm aura that drew in the masses. Even within the halls of SM, which were teaming with current and future stars alike, Yunho's charisma didn't go unnoticed. He was the pride of the company, someone all of the exectuives had high hopes for. It was hard not to notice the talk in the hall about SM's secret weapon.

Park Yoochun was no exception. His first day as a trainee he wasn't in the building an hour before he heard about Yunho for the first time. But seeing as Yoochun was not a paticularly strong dancer they wouldn't have the same classes. He only started to take notice Yunho because of the way the other trainees talked revernantly about him. He tried to figure out his charm, so much to the point that Yoochun became anamored. His ears perked up at every conversation about his senior. His eyes followed the elder boy whenever he saw him around the building.

It didn't take long for Yoochun to figure out the other's routine. Yunho would always arrive with two really loud boys, Kim Heechul and Kim Jaejoong, flanking him on both sides. They would part ways to their indivdual sessions, usually with a  goodbye wink from Heechul that would send Jaejoong in a fit and have Yunho smiling his charming razor tooth smile. The trio were basically inseperable and a staple in the breakroom and longue during rest time.

But as Yoochun watched further he realized that there was a rift between. He thought the three inffaliable. Nothing could tear them apart. They were true friends, the likes of which Yoochun didn't have in Korea nor in the States. He admired them for it. He wanted to be like them and be close to them. He couldn't be more wrong.

It shook him to see his idols' bond was something fabricated within his starstruck mind. He hated seeing the way Heechul would talk so animatedly to Yunho yet cut his eyes at Jaejoong so violently. He hated the way Jaejoong ignored Heechul's presence in favor of praising Jungsoo's piano skills. It weighed on his heart the way Yunho seemed to ignore it both in favor of scolding Youngwoon who sat laughing as Hankyung fumbled over Korean words.

Understanding didn't dawn upon Yoochun until it came to smack him in the face with its blatanism. Somehow Yoochun's young mind couldn't process the truth. He didn't register the meaning of Heechul's winks or Jaejoong's shy glances until that evening when he stood unnoticed at the doorway of the studio, listening in on things he should have never heard.

"Yunho you have to chose! You can't keep leading us on liike this."

"Hyung..."

Heechul sounded frustrated but a little hurt. "How could you do this to us? To me?"

"We were just hanging out," Yunho replied.

"I don't believe this. So that... all of that meant nothing. The night in Busan. The other day after practice and--"

"Jaejoong is important to me too. If not more so. What is there to choose between? It was never like that, Hyung. You know that. You and Jaejoong's fighting, that's on you. I have nothing to do with it."

Yoochun could hear Yunho's footsteps against the floor as he headed towards the door.

"Yunho! Jung Yunho!" Heechul screeched and punctuated each word with a stomp. "Don't you dare walk out on me!"

There was a silence.

"Why would you play with my heart like this if you had no intention of following through with it? If you walk out on me right now then you are saying my kisses meant nothing. My time meant nothing. If you walk out of here and choose Jaejoong so help me I will--"

Heechul's words ended there and Yoochun risked a chance to peek through the door's glass windows to see the pair hugging against the back drop of blue sky and cumulous clouds, Yunho repeatedly mouthing "sorry" into the other's ear.

It left Yoochun cold. It left him hollow. And for the first time he realized that his facination with Jung Yunho was more than just admiration. His preoccupation with Heechul and Jaejoong was of the desire to be in their place. He wanted nothing more right then to be in Heechul's shoes. But that wasn't for him. He was just a silent participant in the play of their lives.

After a week Yoochun found himself called into the office with 4 other boys. Yunho, Jaejoong, Junsu and little Changmin. They would be in a group together and live together.

Living together gave Yoochun full access to the subject of his adoration. His crush blossomed into more as he watched the play between Heechul and Jaejoong. The fued between Jaejoong and Heechul only seemed to become even worse. But it was strange. There was no doubting the connection between Yunho and Jaejoong. Any man would be blind to see that.

Because of that Yoochun wasn't hopeful for much more than what he had. He was satisfied with the good job pat on the backs, the thumbs up and ruffling of his hair, and the way his  new leader would sometimes lean against his lap in the middle of his laughter.

As he silently waited for Yunho to  make a choice between the two divas in their midst, when the time came it left him reeling from the full impact of the shock. Because as he waited patiently, contenting himself with what little he could have, it wasn't one of the divas Yunho chose.

It was him.
